Water in waste oil can

I left the funnel in my waste oil can during the last storm and now I have water in the can. The recycler will not take it.

Any ideas a to how to separate it?

If you have time, and also have another container, just set the contaminated container aside for a few weeks and let it separate. Then pump off a few inches at a time until you hit water. You did not say how big the can was; if not to heavy you could pour it through a Mr Funnel, and the warmer the mixture, the faster the flow of course. If this is a barrel with just bung holes for openings, things may be a little more difficult.

Wow. That's just wrong. At work often some coolant ends up in the oil drums; never has anything been said.
When I was in the AF, we separated waste oil, Hyd fluid and Jet fuel. the recycler came in and sucked all of it into the one hose (making me wonder why we kept them separate). the last one he sucked dry was the JP4 that had a lot of water in it. He didn't care- said it will be removed at the recycling plant.


Find another recycler. At our Landfill they have a place you dump your oil. no inspection. Many auto shops will take it, as they sell it to the recyclers anyway. there has to be a better option.

orezok, Like syphoning anything else you can get a piece of tygon tubing 1/4" id. Thread on a couple of 3/8" nuts onto one end for weight, tilt the can so one corner or edge is low, lower the tubing 'till it hits bottom, syphon into another container. You should get water then oil. Stop when you get oil. MikeD74T
