My experience with black poly pipe is limited, but also very negative. First, there are different grades of it. There is the cheap, thin stuff that you buy at Home Depot and Lowes. Then there is the heavy duty stuff that gonna be tought to find, and allot more money.

There are allot of yard sprinkler systems that are installed with the black poly that is very quick and easy for a contractor with a vibrator to install. The problem is they always have to come back to fix the repairs. I tell clients who want me to put in a system to shy away from the guys who run poly as it's just a matter of when they will need them back for a repair.

The city of Tyler, where I live, ran a bunch of heavy duty black poly water lines in some of it's subdivisions. At the time that they ran it, they thought it was the next, greatest thing. Today there are crews working 24/7 to repair the leaks in it. They work around the clock and when you call, you are added to the waiting list until your turn comes up. It just doesn't last or hold up to the natural movements in the soil. The guys that I talked to said that it's still cheaper to pay their saleries then it will be to dig it all up and replace it.

There are plenty of people who run it and never have a problem. You might be one of those lucky ones. It's really a question of how much are you saving, compared to what it will cost you if you have to deal with a leak?
