water pump squeal

My John Deere 302 Industrial tractor now has a squeal in the front of the engine. I replaced the alternator and the belt doesn't seem to be the problem so I'm left with the water pump. How difficult is changing out this pump?

Prestone makes a water pump lube. Might try that before you go the expense and trouble of a changeout, especially if the shaft seal isn't leaking.....yet. No biggie to changing the pump on my Fords; don't imagine your Deere is any tougher.

It depends on if you choose to replace the assy (housing is typically re-usable unless broken) or rebuild the water pump. It can be difficult for dealers to rebuild this style of a water pump and not have it cost about the same or sometimes more than a complete assy with labor costs where they are at anymore. The repair parts themselves are relativly inexpensive. If you have a press or access to one then a rebuild is the way to go, replace the impeller even if it looks ok while you are in there as a small amount of wear equals a substantial amount of flow loss. If doing the assy there are aftermarket versions available but are easiest if you find one that already has a hub pressed on as that can be difficult to install w/ out damaging the new seal already in the pump. First take the belt off and check how the water pump turns and if the shaft has slop.

As suggested, some dressing on the belt first.

you said you replaced the alternator did you use your old pulley if so you might want to get a new pulley. a worn out pulley will make same squeal because belt is running to low in groove this will be easier and less costly than doing anything with water pump this applies to v groove and multi groove belts and pulley combos
