Other than smoke staining the ceiling of a metal building, is there a reason not to install a water stove inside my metal building?

This is going to heat the house/water heater in house. If I buy one big enough, I can heat the building but it isn't a primary goal at present.

Also, my gravel floor isn't sealed with a vapor barrier. Is it necessary and do I need to insulate the inside for condensation? I need to do all this before the stove install if i do. Weather here is in the teens in winter, humid and 90's in the summer months.

Thanks for any ideas.

Moore, Vulcana, Rinnal, etc all make gas heaters that one can place a pot of water to humidify large areas. My grand parents had a really nice Moore heater.

I would assume the logic for the water stove would fall very close the the same guidelines.

In my area, I've seen temps in the single minus digits with 3% humidity.

Are you talking about a wood stove heating water ie wood boiler? Wood boiler inside a building will smoke when you open the door to feed the boiler. Had one in the garage, and had a smoky residue/dust when we moved out and cleaned everything out. Just saying. Might be able to develope a hood arrangement over the door with an exhaust fan to remove the smoke. Jon

I had the same question. It made sense when members mentioned smoke in the garage/building. I am leaning toward having a pole barn against the shop for the boiler to be under the pole barn. That being said, I wonder If I could run part of the exhaust pipe into a chimney inside the shop? An exhaust pipe will put out a lot of heat.

To illustrate, a pipe like this going into the shop and exiting through a chimney or insulated pipe would provide heat. Just an idea; it may not be practical.

Bad idea. Smoke and dust will make your shop nasty. Put the stove outside under a carport type structure big enough to cover a couple of chord of wood and the stove So you don’t have to dig wood out from under snow. Make sure you have a ridge vent to allow the smoke to escape the structure when you open the door. Ask your stove dealer if they can install a manual override switch for your combustion blower. The running of the blower a few minutes will get the fire flaming good and clear out the smoke before you open the door. Find you a used air handler for your shop and install a second water heat transfer coil in it. You do not need a second circulation pump. Just split hot water supply coming from the stove and send one to the shop and one to the house. You can put ball valves on the supply and when you don’t need heat in the shop just close the valve down just to where it has a little flow. I don’t know what stove you are getting but the ones I installed circulated the water constantly. The set up I described worked very well.

I can't remember ever getting smoke in the
basement of our house in Wisconsin, I would
open the damper in the chimney before I opened
the door to add more wood.

IMHO I believe the metal would sweat with heat on
the inside during winter months just like a house with
no vapor barrier or insulation.
