call them. I think they are or were an endangered species up here, you are not suppose to pick them. When I first built twenty years ago there were none that I seen but they gradually started to show up here and there, now there are clumps of them around the property where I have cleared the trees.

The Lady's Slipper is one of the few flowers which has been named for the shape of its blossom. Cypripedium, the scientific name for this flower, actually means venus slipper in Greek. The common name changes it to Lady's Slipper and with an great deal of imagination one can see how this is applicable. This plant is a species of the orchid family. It requires an acidic soil which is why most are seen in the humus rich areas of oak or pine forest.
Always nice to see them:)

That's quite the stand of lady's slipper you have there Steve! I was just out taking a picture of one today too. The white ones seem to be harder to find. :)

Lady Slippers or sometimes called Indian Moccasins are actually an orchid. They can go years without showing themselves, then when conditions are right, they are plentiful. In Michigan at least, I know that they are a protected wildflower.

I have some here that are pure white and also have seen them in deep burgandy or almost purple, the latter being the rarest.
I have been led to understand that the PH of the soil is what determines the color.

Once going by a landfill site I noticed that they were about to bury a whole bunch so I dug them up and lo and behold they transplant quite well.

Here in Georgia they are called Lady Slippers or Pink Lady Slipper Orchids. They are a protected species here. From what I read they are protected to prevent people from trying to transplant them. They will rarely last for more than a year or two after transplanting. The soil needs a fungal condition for them to grow. They are also a plant that lives for many years and doesn't bloom for its first 5 or 6 years.

Thats a real nice stand you have.

Well, those are new ones to me. Thank you Steve and Mark for posting pictures. Steve, in your second picture, one of the bloom pods on the right seems to have a hard shell. Is this a seed pod that forms as the blooms age?

My wife and I love wildflowers. On our recent 5000 mile trip, we took almost as many pictures of flowers as anything else. I may try to identify more of them and post a thread about flowers alongside the highway. When I get time....
