this morning, when my dad was picking up a bucket of clay, he went in reverse, and the front axle bolts, 11 of them, snapped, and the front axle stayed put, when the machine went in reverse, ripping out the drive shaft and transfer case --

-- the service tech said he's never seen anything like this before --

When we rented the Volvo hoe last fall, we sprung a leak about 3 hours into the job - turns out it was right before lunch. The service guy was out & had an O ring replaced before we finished eating. We made him cough up a couple extra, just in case . The machine only had 10 hours on the clock when I got it - I think the line wasn't snugged down properly & the O ring got torn up.

I have to think that those axle bolts were loose to begin with and just made them wear and fail sooner ! Of course thats just a guess, but like your service rep I have never heard of anything like that happening !

Did you notice any unecessary play in the steering prior to the failure ?
