We need another way to stop this

Just saw this video. We need better ways of trapping hogs, so we don't get the deer in the traps as well. I believe some traps have shorter openings to try and get deer to not go in. Just seeing what yalls thoughts were.

any other hog trappers on this forum? What are you doing to prevent other wildlife in your traps?

Make it like a lobster trap. There should be two sections. Divide the space into 1/3 or 1/4 and 3/4 or 2/3rds at the back. The wall between the two sections could have a one-way door that is positioned to allow a hog in but not a deer. And a smaller entrance at the front which would only allow a hog to pass and not a deer. Essentially the hog has to pass through two sections. This would probably slow the deer down and prevent it from entering.

We are trying used cooking oil on the grain to diswade the Deer from getting in the large cage traps?

From talking to the state game biologists, they said that those types of traps are too small to do anything. They said to build a trap big enough to catch dozens of them by putting up hog pannels over a large area, then building a door that will let more in, but none out. Kind of like a set of swinging doors at an old west saloon, but so they only swing in. The ones that swing from the top work too.

That way, you can keep catching more once a few are in there, and you can actually get enough of them to cut down on their numbers!!!!

We caught 1 deer and just opened the door and she ran out. Now I just use open top traps made from cattle panels and the deer can jump out without problem. Also helps to soak the corn in diesel. Deer won't eat it but hogs will.

Heard about the diesel thing too. Might try it when I get some time.

OHHHHH GRrrrrrrrrreat we went from using diesel to get rid of rust to just throwing it on corn, hope it's in some sort of troff{sp}

The diesel does work. It takes just a little bit. It also cuts down on the coons, too. Also, if you make your traps not quite as tall the deer won't go in as readily.
