I planted my garden last weekend. Cold winds Tuesday and Wednesday were gusting 50 to 60 and last night we had a frost. This is the desert! It should be in the 80's to 90's by now.

Rant over.

We are near Houston, Texas

This evening I picked my first batch of spinach, lettuce, radishes, onions, and one small banana pepper! So I had a nice salad, and cooked the spinach in a pan with a couple slices of bacon, delicious!!

I bought fresh made ravioli yesterday at Hubbel and Hudson and they make fresh bread daily. So we also had ciabotta bread with it. What a fabulous meal tonight!! I told hubby he was just going to miss the first picking.

Been to wet here in N. Georgia to get the garden planted. Every time it gets just about dry enough to till we have another 1-2 inches of rain. I am at least 3 weeks behind this year but I guess it is better than the drought we have had the last few years.

Looks like about half the tomatoes, the squash and some herbs are gone. The seeds should be OK as they have not yet sprouted. Oh well, off to the store for some replacement plants.

UPDATE - Just 5 days ago we had a frost that wiped out about 1/2 my garden. Today as I left work the temperature was 106.

Spring in the desert is a season that is 3 days long and starts on a Monday!

I started my tomatoes back around the first of March....it says 6-8 weeks in most instructions, and I usually plant near the first of May. Now, many locals say to wait until May 15 for tomatoes, but most years earlier is fine. However, this year for the first time I had a seed heating mat and boy did it make a difference. I started about 50 tomato seeds and they almost all came up. No problem, even though I'll only plant about 30 and some of them I'll buy because I didn't have the Black Krim and Park's Whopper seeds. Then all those tomatoes started growing, and I've had way leggy plants for the last two weeks, and it's still two weeks before I should put them out. So I took the biggest ones and hardened them off a bit, then I planted them beside a south facing brick wall and covered them with a cattle panel covered with plastic. Kind of a mini greenhouse. Anyway, it got down to about 41 last night and that's the predicted low for the 10 day forecast. Who knows? Maybe I'll have really early tomatoes. On the other hand, I've planted early before and even though I didn't lose plants to cool weather they never really took off until it warmed up, so tomatoes I planted later mostly caught up anyway.
