I know many of you are "real" farmers. What do you like in terms of the electronic weather stations that are availble. I would like one with rainfall and wind speed along with outdoor temps. Anyone have a recommendation or bad experience? Thanks, EL

Are you talking about something to put at your house, or some weatherbug kind of internet site that you go online and look at? MrJimi has one on his signature that shows that info live for his area.

I bought this weather station for my wife for Christmas. It seems to work very well. It comes with one temperature/humidity sensor and you can add up to four more. Has wind speed and direction, atomic clock, rain gauge, uv sensor, temperature and humidity inside and outside, sunrise and sunset times, etc. This was also the best price I could find on it. Most places want $299. Range on the sensors is supposed to be around 100 to 300 feet.

I also bought my wife an $800 diamond bracelet for a Christmas gift. She was more excited about the weather station and kind of brushed off the bracelet. That could have been another implement.

I have a Davis Vantage Pro 2 I got on E-Bay for about $400 a year-and-a-half ago. It measures temperature (in & out), humidity (in & out), wind speed and direction, daily, monthly, & yearly rain as well as rain rate, barometric pressure, wind chill, heat index, and more. I mounted the weather station suite on a tripod on top of the barn (the NWS recommends mounting it 33 feet above ground). As far as maintenace goes I replace the lithium battery in the fall, and after an ice storm I use a heat gun attached to a telescoping pole to thaw out the wind cups and vein to get them functioning again. As far as the rain collection bowl goes there is a heat element available to melt the ice and snow as it comes down if you don't want to wait for Mother Nature to do it herself. The model I have is wireless, but a wire model is available. The console rests on the kitchen counter. Reported range of the wireless model is 1000 feet. All in all I happy with the Davis Vantage Pro 2.
[End of review]

If anyone has an idea as to keeping the wind cups and vein from freezing up from winter weather please let me know. Thanks.

Before you buy a gadget, see what NWS has for your location. They now make interpolated forecasts for any point in the US, based on averaging their nearby observations. Here's one for Poolesville. In particular, look at 'More Local Wx' (nearby sites) and '2 Day History' on that page. (middle of the right column).

NWS Poolesville forecast

If Poolesville isn't close enough, find your map coordinates using Google Earth. Bring up that Poolesville forecast then in the URL bar in your browser, substitute your coordinates for Poolesville's.

The resulting NWS forecast page (and the linked history) is probably the best data available. I think the NWS forecast is better than anything I could forecast even if I had a precise station to know present conditions. I also like their weather satellite 'water vapor' animations. Our rainy weather all comes in from the north Pacific ocean so it's easy to see what's coming at us next.

The western US NWS pages look different than that Pooleville screen. There happens to be an amateur reporting station a mile from me whose 2 day history, with observations every half hour, appears under 'Other local observations'. I can bring up his detail by clicking on a bookmark I set for that purpose. He is one of the stations referenced from this page: NWS Sonoma County. To see what his data looks like, click on one whose time (most recent observation) shows as current.

For me, professional quality readings, a mile away at the same elevation, is as precise as I would ever need.

My son and I went partners on the Davis Vantage Pro wireless model a couple of years ago and so far the only problems we have encountered is occassional loss of signal when on the phone which is also wireless.
We recently got satellite internet service and he now uploads all info to the net. You can see our info here

BTDT. Something for in the house. Not interested in a web page thing. I did see on the LaCrosse Technologies site their pro models include software etc to upload trends etc. I just want temp/humidity wind speed and rain fall all in one place instead of having to look at the barometer, go outside to the rain gauge etc. You all have givin me some great tips, thanks.
