Has anybody had any expierences with this to control weeds in their lawn area? I've read that it's effective if applied before the weeds have a chance to emerge(which will be soon!)...it sure isn't cheap! I have an area that is a newly seeded(2 yrs old) lawn and I want to keep it as weed free as possible.

Just a follow up on this to anybody intersted....it seems that there are a few "commercial brands" out there that have this in them(or may be 100% cgm) and run apprx. $30 to $50 per 50 lb. bag....I called a local feed supplier who states he has this in a 50 lb. bag for $16.30. No name on it, just pure corn gluten meal...that's some price difference! The commercial brand stuff says 50lb. will treat 2500 sq. ft. so I'm giong to apply at this same rate and see what happens.

I had never even heard of using that for weed control. Let us know how it works.

I put CGM on this Spring (about the first of March). So far so good, but it is early, and the CGM got a little help from Mother Nature. We had 5 days of hard freeze (teens and low 20's) after 4 weeks of 80's (and lows in the 50's). Most anything that was germinating got frozen and died.

CGM is effective only as a pre-emergent -- it won't kill weeds already growing, it will just keeps seeds from sprouting.

The first time it rains after your CGM is down, the smell is not pleasant, but it goes away in a couple days.

By the way, from my research, there is absolutely no difference between feed grade CGM from the mill and the product labeled for weed control. The only difference is a licensing fee paid to Iowa State University, who patented the application.

Thanks for the info...was not aware of the smell it gave off but a small price to pay if it's as effective as the web pages have said it is. That's some kind of markup between the feed and the commercial product!

Disclaimer, My window at work faces the Hort building, his office and lab are in. I have not tried the product, But phone conversations with him suggests that multiple applications over the years increases the efficacy of the product. I had called him last year when I was re-sodding a patch of my lawn and wanted to put the stuff down first before laying. he said he had not tested that and would recommend me to apply after the sod had knitted. He didn't know if the CGM would injur the roots.

Thanks agn for the info! I think I missed the "window" for this year...put it down anyways on the grass. I also have two garden beds that have been over run by morning glorys from the previous year's seeds and also put CGM down there to see if it will help. In feed form it's fairly reasonable so I think I will continue to apply each year and hope for the best! On a side subject, I think I will try the Milorganite path on the grass this year as compared to a 10-10-10 fertilizer...from what I've read this will help to green up the grass but won't make ti grow fast like fertilizer and helps the grass maintain it's color in dry conditions??
