Weights of materials.

You can find that information on a reference web page by Reade Advanced Materials. It's pretty amazing how fast the weight of some materials adds up.

"sand, dirt, and gravel. Any maybe crushed stone"

Dry Sand Loose: 2,565 per cu. yd. Wet Packed 3,240

Packed Dirt: 2,025 dry / 2,565 packed / 2,970 wet per yd

Gravel Loose: 2,970 / Wet/Packed 3,240

Crushed/Dust: 2,538

Wet Concrete: 3,995 Average, ready to pour.

All weight in pounds per yard.

Thats out of my rigging hand book that we use as crane operators. Don't know of an online source for building stuff. If you need any est. figure on weights I have the books. Metals too, pipe, red iron, copper, wood, concrete block, fluids.... weights are a big deal with crane operators.

Weights vary when packed or wet too.

Yes it is... I also find it amazing that so many do not think of such things. Yesterday at work we loaded a half ton truck with a full pallet of sakrete. 42 bags x 80lbs each .... you do the math. When I informed him how much it weighed, he just laughed. So, I just put on my best /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif and watched his truck drop all the way down to the exhaust pipes.

A good source of material weights is a book called "POCKET REF" by Thomas J. Glover,
It has 10 pages of materials from ABS to Zinc cast, and covers about anything you could possibly load on your trailer, plus almost anything else you might want to know about almost anything.
The Library of Congress catalog Card Number is 94-067826.
I am sure you can find it at any book store.
Here are some sources I found on Yahoo search,
Amazon.com: Books: Pocket Ref

Sequoia Publishing: Pocket Ref, Handyman Reference & Engineering ...

Sequoia Publishing: Pocket Ref, handyman reference & engineering reference books. Computer repair, weights and measures and Pocket PCRef. ...

A very handy little black book.

Don't think you'll be loading that to overflowing. 6 x 12 x 2ft is 144 cubic feet or 5.33 yards. Figure an average of 3000lbs/yd for most stone/dirt/sand material and you're looking at over 15,000lbs of material, not including the weight of the trailer itself. Even the heavy duty one had a gvw of 12,000.

Let me add one that came out to more than I expected.

yard waste - weeds, leaves, twigs, branches : 300 pounds / yd

How do I know?

8 ft bed truck, 5 1/2 ft wide, piled 4 ft deep came in at 1800 pounds. That's a little over 6 cubic yards. Was just under gwvr of the f350 truck. And I see gardeners haul far more in their little import trucks /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I go on the rule of thumb 100lbs / cu-ft for dirt.
Comes to 2700 lbs/yd which I round to 1 ton for light (sand, dry dirt), 1 1/2 tons for heavy (gravel, clay, concrete)

Certainly not definitive, but easy to remember. Seems to line up with the estimates above.

How many times you seen a 1 yd bucket of dirt / topsoil / stone dumped in the back of a half-ton /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

fractal, you say that 1800 lbs put you just under the gvw of your F350, i cant believe that since i know for a fact that i have hauled over 3500lbs in my F350 single rear wheel truck and been still legal, and that truck has a very heavy built flatbed on it as well as a front bumper and winch that weigh a decent amount, so i gota wonder how much weight in accesories you have on your F350, or is the gvw unusualy low for some reason? if i had a 1 ton truck rated to carry just a bit over 1800lbs i would scrap it, most any 1ton will carry atleast 3500lbs legaly, often alot more with a dualy. of course maybe nowdays they are making them more light duty since everyone wants a F350 just to be cool. i remember a guy borrowed my car trailer once to haul a tractor and when we hooked it up it squated the rear end of the truck like it was a half ton.
