Welders: Portable vs. Plug-in

   / Welders: Portable vs. Plug-in #41
The one I have used a 16hp onan engine with a 1 1/8" tapered shaft. I could not afford a new engine like that so I cut the shaft off the onan and machined a coupler for it. I slid the coupler on the 1" step down shaft of the briggs engine. I then had to make a spacer for the the engine mount because the shaft was almost 4" longer. I would of liked to have just machined the crankshaft on the briggs to fit but it was not long enough. You can buy replacement engines with a taper. I think small engine warehouse has a couple different brands that will fit but cost way more than I felt the welder was worth.

Just an update here.

I finally made some time to tinker with the welder. I cleaned out the carburetor and I can get the thing to almost run. It will sputter and spit for as much as a minute and then die. Compression is good... >120. I think that the carburetor is just not cleaned out enough yet. There was one oriface I just couldn't every get clean.

I might be worth it to just get a new carb. Are parts available for this engine still? The side of it says it's an Onan CCKA-S/1627

Parts are widely available, but you're gonna crap your pants when you pull out the wallet!!.
I think that's just a Marvel-Sheibler so you can just keep cleaning....ain't much to hurt in there.

I noticed that it's pretty simple. I've soaked it. Used up a can of carb cleaner, bent one of my tip cleaners, and there's still no passage through what I think is the main jet.

any ideas?

Plenty of light, plenty of patience add a very small drill bit (hand turn) and to at it.
Here's on of many sources I found searching "onan carberator parts" Replacement Carburetor Parts for Onan

BTW; I hope to fire up my onan generator this weekend after cleaning the carb and fuel pump which looked like they sat in water for the last couple of years.

Since I no longer have the engines I can't just go look but this picture might help.
Do a search for Marvel-Schebler carb.

The term arm and a leg is optomistic when figuring the price of Onan parts. Fuel pump, set of points and condensor, and coil for a CK costs about 3 bills.

Make sure that venturi ( see the picture ) in the middle is very free to move up and down.
