Depends a lot on how you welded it but 7018 or stronger 8018 rod would be a better choice of rod. Is the cylinder being used or just an old shaft? Can you post a picture? For your machine, I'd get some 7018 AC, put a good bevel on the rod and put 2 or 3 passes on.

I did some web searching just to be sure, and it looks like cylinder rods are typically made of mild steel, so no special provisions should be required when it comes to welding. I would be curious to hear more about your weld procedure. Did you bevel the rod, or did you just do a bead around the perimeter of the joint, for example? How many beads did you run?

As you might imagine, that is going to be an incredibly high stress area, so any deficiency in your procedure or technique will stand out.

was the cylinder chrome plated? If yes wouldn't that also weaken the weld?

Here is a cylinder end on my Jinma Backhoe that failed.
I made a new ring for the bushing and welded the ring to the rod with 7018 rods. It's not real pretty but I cranked up the amps and burned it in to get good fusion.
It has held for several years now.
Make sure you protect the rod from spatter, it will ruin the cylinder.

I welded one on a mustang skid steer once. I remember I had to crank it up pretty high to get good pen.

the bracket where the rod goes into the bracket was not much wider than the rod itself. was not able to grind on it. was able to grind on the rod. was able to use about half a rod at a time to get down to it. went around to it 2-3 times. used a 5/32 6011 rod set on 135. could have welded on the outside where it went into the bracket real good. just fgured welding on the inside would be good enough. my mistake. after it failed i though it might be a stainless rod and might take a different welding rod. first time i ever welded a rod before.

I suspect that 135 is a little low on the amperage.
