There is an Amish fella near here that does welding, he's cheap and does decent work so he's usually busy. Biggest problem is getting stuff to him, another guy has a portable welding outfit and he makes house calls, more expensive but he also does nice work.

All of the above being said....

I do my own welding too (not good at it, but I do it anyway...) and I've constantly got guys from work wanting me to weld stuff for them. Also, my dad made some money by doing welding on the side just from people in the neighborhood. Seems like there's always a market for the service around here.

So I think it's a great idea, as long as you can stay clear from any gummit' regulations, licenses, etc.

I do most of my own welding, but sometimes I need to hire an expert to do something. I tried a few of the local guys and the small operations, but found them to be too flakey. If I'm hiring it done, I need it done, and I don't want to deal with excuses or them not being there when they say it will be ready.

Now, I go to the biggest, and probably most expensive place in town. I tell them what I want done, and they do it. I pay what they charge and get on with what I'm doing.

The most important thing is not price, but being reliable. There are guys all over here who are struggling and don't realize it's because they are unreliable and have a reputation as a flake. When people are willing to pay more to do what they could do, but chose not to, is proof that there's plenty of work out there.

Good luck, there's always an oportunity for somebody who wants to start a business and is serious about it.

Like Eddie I do most of my simple welding here at home. It isn’t pretty but it does the job. When I go to a welder it is for items I can’t handle and that mostly involves specialty equipment for precision cuts, bends or the ability to weld materials that cannot. It takes a large investment to equip a pro welding shop.

Eddie has some great points. You are asking a question in a section entitled customizing, i think in this area most people do alot of work themselves.
I think it is a good idea to start your own business. Just make sure you do a quality job and be honest.
And just because someone around the corner is doing the same thing doesn't mean you start your bus. it is call competition.
