Thanks Ron, just downloaded it. Looks quite comprehensive. Was going to print it out until I saw the page count!

There is a lot of info there you will never use. Just print the pieces you need when you need them. PDFs are better to do that than books.

Ron

Yeah was going to go through when I have sometime and print them salient parts.

I just looked through it. They show 80 20 for gas MIG wire welding. I thought everybody used C25 75 25 for solid MIG wire welding if you are running a mixture and not straight CO2. Spray, stainless, and aluminum are different.

Gas mixes are all over the map these days. A lot of the new equipment out there will run CO2 just as good as 75/25. I think 75/25 is still the go to gas for short arc. I use a mixer so I have all the gases for steel, stainless and aluminum. If not for the mixer I'd opt for 90/10 or something close with a CO2 and an Argon there too.

Using 80/20 is a nice compromise since it'll weld short arc mig and spray arc.

The manual is a British publication, they are a marine construction company as well as an industrial supplier; hence the equipment adds you see. Take it with a grain of salt. Still a lot of good information. Miller has free publications available on the web also that are current to the US practices. Just downloaded their one on TIG welding.

I wonder if my local supplier will put 80/20 in a C25 bottle? And can you order 80/20? Is the cost the same? Anybody using 80/20?

As you go up in argon so does the price. I'm not sure you would notice a big difference using 80/20 but you can get 85/15 or if you know the right people at your LWS and they pump there, They are capable of frankensteining anything. I have 98/2 argon CO2 put into 150cf bottles at one of my LWS's. Argon Co2 for twin pulsed stainless. Cost more though. It's all about cost. I think Mark from Everlast uses an odd mix like 88 Argon balance CO2. Praxair has their original Stargon gas that has about 3% O2 in it to create extra heat. I'm not much for oxygen in mig gas but it was popular with the old spray arc guys back in the day for steel and stainless. Things are better now though.
