welding tips with propane

Question for you guys. I am picking up a purox torch tomorrow (used) that comes with 6 welding tips.
My question is, will these standard acetylene welding tips work with propane for brazing? Is there anything dangerous that could go wrong? Should I just give it a shot?

I am thinking of getting a #200 propane rosebud for it. (purox has a different number system)
Sure, it would drain my oxygen tank in 20 minutes, but it would sure be nice for heavy bending!

All my welding and heating tips work on propane. Welding steel needs the extra heat value of the Acetylene plus the control of the carbon content of the puddle which propane does not have. Cutting tips are special for propane as the heating part is different due to the difference in heat value of the gasses.

I have always used acetylene until I recently decided to at least have the propane option. Just ordered propane cutting tips and a #8 rosebud nearly 3 weeks ago. The rosebud was back ordered until 7 Sept but they are finally sending the cutting tips after I complained about their email stating shipping in 4-7 days and two weeks later not yet shipped. Looking forward to how propane works.

It is difficult to maintain a propane flame on an acetylene tip, especially a welding tip. The flame tends to get blown out very easily. It's very hard to adjust and maintain the flame.

Propane tips are recessed for more stability.

My standard rosebud works okay on propane but welding and cutting tips are a problem.

Note also, that propane degrades standard acetylene hoses over time. It's best to replace the hoses with an "all fuel" hose.

I don't think you will have much luck trying to use the acetylene tips for anything except acetylene. Interesting to hear how it works out..

Well, I will give it a shot. If it doesn't work, I might see about getting a 390cf acetylene tank....
I can see my self using a lot more gas soon. I am considering setting up a business account with air liquide, and leasing their biggest tanks....

I think that with the biggest acetylene tank, and mainly using propane for cutting and heating, the cost wouldn't be too bad.

Cutting with propane is somewhat acceptable for me, it does take a little longer to preheat. I don't like propane for heat shrinking at all!:thumbdown:

You cant weld with propane, the flame is not inert and will encapsulate air in the bead.

I thought it was CO( carbon monoxide) not CO2 (carbon dioxide).
