Welding with a carbon arc, and silicon bronze filler rod

OK, so at 9 PM tonight I finally found time to try it

Electrode neg, 25 amps, sharpened carbon in the PA-300 stinger, and a scrap piece of angle on a scrap of galvanized

The first one was real sloppy, the second one I got a little better

Looks good to me. I've brazed with a single carbon before, also used it to heat and bend metal.

I didn't know you could use a single carbon in the electrode holder. Learn something every day.

Looks like with a little practice you will get pretty good at it. I'll bet it's plenty strong right now. If you beat on that angle with a hammer, I bet it would tear a piece of the tin off with it.
Where did you get the carbons and what size did you use? I assume you found some solid ones.

I'd like to try that. Looks like fun. Good job :thumbsup:

I bought them at a local welding supply house, Nowak Supply. 1/4 inch carbons wrapping in what appears to be a copper jacket
The carbons were very inexpensive. Use a pencil sharpener to sharpen the carbons
The silicon bronze was a little pricy, but not terrible.

When you start hold the carbon to the work piece until you want to start welding, so you do not blow a huge hole.

When you are situated pull the carbon away to creak the arc and start feeding your filler rod.
