You got that right! The biggest baddest olive trees are the ones over the septic field. I hestitated to mention this before thinking it might gross people out but I figure hey BN'ers are smart enoguh not to be grossed out by that. In that field the trees produce a LOT of olives and are just much larger stronger than other trees planted the same time over in the next field.

You buy bentonite in bags and pour it down the gap between the well and the dirt. The bentonite expands as it hydrates to fill in all the nooks and crannies and provide a proper seal. It will undoubtedly squish upwards until it is fully hydrated. I would use a shovel and scoop/cut off the goop that squirts up above grade and dispose of it somewhere that you don't walk. Remember that there is 18' of it below grade doing the sealing so the junk on top is of no value.
