I had a feeling my center bearing was about to go. Mower just hasn't been running right. Anyone have a direction to look for new 1850 mower bearings? At the moment I am going to gut the whole mower.. Replace all bearings, pound out dents, I was just hoping to finish my last mow of the season.

I will take some pix of the tear down.

Look on the bearings for a number and go shopping either local or on the Internet.

Ditto.

Forget searching by MFG or MFG part number. Get the actual bearing number.

Upper Bearing is part # L44649
Lower Bearing is part # L68149

Common also to trailer hubs so available at many auto parts stores.

Carl, we're again apparently living parallel lives..;)

I'm knee deep in very same repairs. I'll bore you with crib note version of why I need replace my (recently replaced) bearings as it may save you or someone else a future headache

Took mower, tiller and trencher for repairs to a neighbor mechanic early this spring. Got the mower back in June and mowed maybe a half acre before I broke a blade. Broke off not one but two of those #%&&% chinese crap bolt extractors and between that and foul weather didn't mow for over a month (also working on trout ponds so incentive to mow was not top priority). ANyway. last week finally repaired the blade and got back to it...mowed the eight terraced rows of our orchard and as I turned down the lowest last row noticed the left spindle wobbling. This was maybe three hours of use after completely replacing all bearings!!

Turns out the KEY was not pushed down to also hold the slotted nut, which managed to spin loose, dropping the dougnut down the shaft enough to tear up the bearings....

MAKE SURE THE KEY IN THE KEYWAY IS POSITIONED FOR DOUBLE DUTY TO HOLD BOTH THE PULLY AND THE SLOTTED NUT!!!

I've decided to accept this a sign that I should quit whining, suck it up and just do my own repairs...I may capitulate again some time but for now.....

Best,

I am taking pix and will provide a write up of my experience, but does anyone have suggestions for a heavier duty bearing? I will be at napa tomorrow. My neighbor is an amazing mechanic and he was right there saying why are these standard trailer bearings?

I have to ask, did you put any grease in the hub, and was there any grease in there when you tore it apart?

Why trailer bearings you say.

Because the mower spindle is probably a wheel hub.

So trailer bearing would apply.

You might look at the manufacturer of the bearings and see if they are Chinese.

You might try a different type of grease.

If bearings don't get moisture in them, they tend to last a long time.

Well I had this happen to me about a year ago and put it on an old post on here. I was pretty upset at the time but it wasn't to bad and I learned a lot about the mower deck.
Here is the thread I posted it on.
