Tractor
Deere 4710/reverser, JD 318 (still needs TLC), JD LT160
After mucho research while the property legal stuff was being worked out, I am finally getting closer to negotiating time on a tractor... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

(...and thanks to all here for the many questions answered...)

So - does anyone have any recommendations/warnings regarding JD dealers in or near SW PA? I think all the big JD ag dealers in this area are all under "Maple Mountain" so I'm not sure how much bargaining I'll be able to do.

Tim....

The dilemma you're in is very difficult if all local JD dealers are owned by the same entity and they all maintain high retail prices similar to the MSRP. It almost forces you to look elsewhere in other states to get a good deal. Now....don't readily dismiss this suggestion. With a $20-30K+ tractor package the savings could total in the thousands of dollars. This would more than offset any transportation costs you would realize in getting the tractor delivered to your place.

Having said this, let me suggest you contact Mark Brucker at KC-Canary, Fultonville, NY. Phone# is 518-853-3405. KC is also a sponsoring advertiser here at TBN with their banner advertisement. I purchased my JD 4710 from KC-Canary and couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. They provided what I thought were extremely good retail prices reflecting hefty percentage discounts off MSRP when compared to 4 other dealers I had shopped at. I believe their free delivery only extends to 150 miles. But, even if you had to pay a couple hundred $s for transportation this would more than be offset by the thousands dollars extra savings you might realize than if you bought local. Just a suggestion to consider....

Bob,

You're right - and I've seen plenty of positive comments regarding KC-Canary on here so if I were closer they would certainly be an good option. (They're not much shy of 500 miles by road NE of me.)

Ironically I have 3 "big" JD "ag" dealers within 25 miles of my place as the crow flies and a couple more maybe twice that far out so you'd think there'd be a lot of choices. However, outside of lawn care dealers who can order a CUT or all the "Maple Mountain" sites (and admittedly I have no idea at this point what the relationship / cooperation / competition is between them - or how they are to work with /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif it just doesn't seem to bode well) there is only ONE other dealership pretty close. Oddly enough they go by "Lone Maple" but don't seem to be part of the other group.

As an example, right now according to "Machinery Link" they've got a 2001 4500 MFWD with reverser, turfs, and a 460 loader with 220 hours on the meter for $18,900 asking on their lot. I'm not that interested in that particular specimen, but that seems to me to be a pretty reasonable price even if it has a scrape or two so I'm hoping they are down-to-earth on new purchases as well.

If I do have to go further afield, there are a lot more choices (non "Maple Mountain") "over the hills" to the east when you get into south-central PA. (Also getting close to New Holland, PA /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

I'm not too worried about a bit of an initial delivery expense from a more remote dealer - but about the logistics of follow-up warranty care. I'd much rather develop a good relationship with a more local dealer if possible - but I haven't read about anyone's purchasing stories here close by me - good or bad.

Who knows - maybe the locals will turn out to be a great bunch of guys. I can only hope (and hope that wolbert just caught them on a bad day!)

Barring all other benefits - ex service - price - Sometimes You will find business's with the same family name - But their not connected - I think they call it family feud or Divorce. We got a Couple of RV dealerships in Northen Maryland - Used to be 1 family, they split and opened a another RV dealership a mile down the road. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have you gone to the JD Web Site and search for the dealers in your area. Using your town as the center you can go out 25 miles - 50 miles - 100 miles - 500 miles (Kc Canary) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif How about Eastern Ohio - Maryland

I have made a couple of trips from PA to Georgia and was able to locate every JD Dealer located within 25 miles of the Interstate. (here's 1 good thing about the JD web site). /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The other half wanted to hide the Laptop. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Yep - the JD dealer locator is where I started.

Actually - if you do a search based on "compacts" quite a few dealers come up - including those that I would call the "lawn care" guys.

One of those dealerships is within a mile or two - he's a good guy, my in-laws have dealt with him for small stuff and like him - but I've never seen anything bigger than a lawn mower on his lot. I'd be concerned he wouldn't have the facilities or experience to do any wrenching on a bigger tractor.

Has anyone bought a 4000-series from one of these types of dealerships? How did it work out?

Well Tim....it sounds like you've got a good strategy. The point on the warranty is well worth considering...much easier if you were located near a local dealer who could quickly run out to your place to correct a minor warranty issue or two. But, your strategy of gradually easing out to shop at the furthermost dealers is also prudent.

In fact, I would suggest the following. It sounds like you've been planning this a long time now.....so, instead of rushing things now, take a few more weeks or a month or so and get quotes from as many dealers as possible. Put together your line item shopping list of exactly what you want, hand it to the dealers as you visit them, and ask them to give you THEIR BEST LINE ITEM PRICE on everything. Let them know you're shopping around and you're looking for the best deal. If they really want to deal they'll be more than glad to oblige you and work up a line item breakdown of prices. This is comparison shopping.....and this is what I did with 5 dealers I went to over a 4-week period last March.

For me, KC-Canary won out when they came in with the best price quote on the whole tractor package. Ironically, they were the dealer that was the furthest away from me (about 70 miles) and one I never originally considered until John Miller III recommended them. But, I also learned a lot about how the other dealers operated. A couple dealers never bothered to give me the line item breakdown I was looking for....they provided only the grand total that didn't help as much as the delineated price breakdown when trying to understand how good of a deal I was getting. One of these two same dealers came back with a total package price two weeks after I provided them with my list....somewhat tardy since I told all these guys I was looking to make a tractor deal within a week or so. A third dealer took about 10 days but it took nagging e-mails and a phone call on my part to get that price breakdown. The point I'm making here is I got to see for myself how dealers operate....the good and the bad aspects regarding price, customer interaction, etc....and I used all of these experiences to help me decide on purchasing from KC-Canary. They came back with a line item price quote within 2-3 days. I did all my negotiating with Mark through one visit at the dealership and then numerous subsequent e-mails. All details on price and delivery were nailed down before I signed the contract. They delivered when they promised they would and the remainder of the story is told elsewhere in these forums.

So, final points I'm suggesting are: 1) give the Maple Mountain dealers a fair shot....see how they deal, 2) take a few trips out to the more distant dealerships and get a feel for their prices and how they do business, and 3) consider the Ohio, New York, Maryland dealers that have garnered good testimonials by other TBN members. You'll learn much in this comparison shopping adventure besides price considerations and all this information will coalesce at some point for you.

My bet is you go this route and you'll find a 'good' dealer you may not even be cognizant of right now who'll give you a fair deal, good service terms, and the feeling you've found a dealer you could depend on in the future if you had follow-up questions on anything pertaining to your purchase.

Hope this helps out somewhat. Let us know how you make out.

timb,

Here is another PA dealer to try - Stonehams .

They are a small John Deere dealer which mainly deals with landscapers and homeowners. A little bit of the larger Ag stuff, but not much. The are located in Waynesboro, PA which would probably be 3.5 to 4 hours away for you.

If you decide to call them, ask for James Stoneham - he will guide you in the right direction.

Good luck,

Terry
