We went in and out of Adak may times, in those day there was a CG Tender there, there was a small Navy unit there, and a marine unit. The marines bar was a good place. By the end of the 1970's much of Adak's military presence was gone. HS

It increased after you were there. Per census it was 2249 in 1970, 3315 in 1980 and 4633 in 1990. The island was a good place to spy on the Russians. They put a McDonalds on the base after I left. They downsized in 1994 and closed the base in 1997.

We were flying back to the US from Hong Kong while the storm was churning. We flew on Cathay Pacific, great airline and if they ever do domestic flights in the US, the US airlines will go out of business forever. The food on the plane was EXCELLENT! Service was outstanding as well. The planes we were on had displays in the seat back to watch movies, play games, watch the view from the belly camera and watch our route and estimated arrival times/mileage. When the flight started we were to fly north of the Aleutians crossing just west of Adak but as the flight progressed the path stayed south of the islands to get back to the US. I knew there was a storm up there but I did not realize how bad it was until I got up and checked the weather charts. That storm was a bad'n.

Stopped at Kiska Island on one patrol, got some time to wonder the hillside and dig around the Japanese artifacts from WWII still there, took some souvenirs. Like going back in time, it's a weird feeling sitting on a grassy hill all by yourself, surrounded by the ocean for great distances. Your ship looks small in the harbor, and you realize it's your only way home. HS
