Helical Earth Anchors by Intech. They do get pricy, however.

( LB; I've been getting them from a water treatment plant in a small town not far from me. Hydrogen Peroxide comes in them, 55 gals apiece. I've hauled around 30 of them upnorth for the locals. One neighbor used them to make a septic tank for his deerblind. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif He's very serious about hunting ya know. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I'm not sure what the peroxide is for tho. I think they remove sulfur from the drinking water with it.

I'm curious, how would you use them in making a drainage ditch? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

Chris; Yes, I've seen these in action before. Quite impressive the results you get. And, you're right, they do get expensive, /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif but they are an option. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The advantage to the earth augers is you just keep adding extensions on and screwing them into the ground until you hit cohesive enough soil to resist the specified torque. I had priced them a couple years ago to do a similiar task, cross a peat bog to get to my lake. The labor quoted was $300 per piling, then add on the piling cost. The contractor I found uses a driver that is hydraulic driven and fits on a skidsteer, but the website states handheld drivers are available. I could not find a rental place for the driver, and couldn't find anybody to sell me the augers without using an authorized contractor - too much lawyer exposure I guess.

For just a simple dock walkway, you could probably use the cast aluminum screw heads that I've seen in the local ACO hardware store. They are made to go into 2" aluminum pipe, but you could probably use 2" schedule 80 galvanized steel pipe. The advantage is that the schedule 80 could be threaded, while the ACO store aluminum pipe is not theaded. Extensions could be added on until solid soil is reached. A local marine/dock store sells a large rachet-like device to turn these into the ground, but this is by hand, and looks like a lot of manual labor. Somebody that is more mechanically inclined could probably convert one of these into a hydraulically driven device.

Another alternative is to use a large steel plate, ~ 24"x24"x1/2", as a mud pad, and make your cross pieces supporting the walkway adjustable so you could raise the walkway as the mud plate slowly sinks into the ground. This method would take a lot of diagonal cross bracing to stabilize the walkway.

Chris; I think what I'm going to settle on, is to use some pressure treated 3/4" plywood for a mudpad, then attach treated 4X4's the length I need, and if it sinks a little, I could adjust the height just by drilling another hole and bolting the beam to the 4X4 at a different spot. Quite simple to do really.
I only need the walkway about a foot in elevation above the bog. The most water that is there is only 2-3" if that, depending on how the beavers are doing. When walking on the bog, it feels like your walking on sponges anytime other than winter when it's frozen. I plan on an observation platform with a blind for viewing critters. You could also read that as "deer" blind. But don't tell Jan. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

In my area up there, the DNR is flying quite a bit, so I'm going to have to be careful or deal with all kinds of departments that we only know by an acronym. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Thanks for the ideas guys, you've all helped me out and maybe some others too! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
