What’s an acceptable range?

Our Daihatsu minitruck gets 35 mpg and holds 8 gallons, but I never drive farther than a few miles from home with it.
If I were to have an accident in that little truck, I would meet Jesus real quick.

Now the Ram diesel holds 135 gals, but only gets 16 -19 mpg = about 2400 mile range, not bad if you have to bug out...

I guess acceptable depends on how far you need to go on a daily basis. Towing I can get around 500 miles per tank with my F-150 and closer to 700 miles unloaded, I would say that is plenty for me. Lately since I have a company car for work my truck only gets used on the weekends and it usually has a trailer on it, I can go months without putting gas in it sometimes.

If the idiots that designed my 2014 F250 diesel would have put the proper size fuel tank I could get 800 miles to the tank, unloaded.
But with a 27 gal fuel tank its about 375.

My friend that tows a 20' trailer every working day had one vehicle traded early because if the small fuel tank...

He said the tank size cost him at least another 20 minutes on some runs which turned into hours wasted.

After that range was a top factor...

When we got our 2017 F150 one of the must have items was the 36 gallon tank.

When I worked at the Tool and Die the pressure vessal welder had a nice side business from his home shop building custom RV fuel tanks.

Apparently it's a niche market few are willing to venture being automotive and gasoline...
