So here is the history
I have been storing diesel in a 50 gallon plastic food grade barrel for at least 6 years. Initially I had a manual pump (hand crank) and a couple of years ago I picked up a 12 Volt system. there was NO filter on that system. Spring of last year I am out driving around on my pt and it fails, stalls out completely. I dig into it and find my fuel pre filter and main filter clogged with metal rust flakes. What gives?
I tear into my fuel delivery system and find that the pipe that the cheap chinese pump had that was left exposed over the winter in the barrel had rusted. Did a complete teardown of my tank, changed it to PVC parts internally, and completely sanitized my tractors fuel system. I also bought an inline diesel filter for my tank.
Flash forward to yesterday. Climbing out of a ravine and the tractor stalls. limp back to the garage and it feels like a fuel issue. I tear it apart and the pre filter is completely clogged with rusty debris.
But how. From the picture below this is my current fuel delivery system. the only metal left after the filter is the piece of 1" pipe and the elbow. I guess they could be rusting, or it could be the handle, but seems like a bit of a stretch.
It could also be my tank, in that maybe there was stuff that I did not get cleaned out from the last incident.
Any ideas appreciated.
