What am I missing out on if I buy a 990

Well here is my take. You do have to stop to shift from forward to reverse, which takes applying the brake pedal. It seems seamless to me, with only a rare gear grinding. I like to use the brake to stop the tractor, it helps keep me in the seat without my face hitting the steering wheel. By past experiences in a panic or high stress situation with hydrostatic pedals or levers, you always seem to end up in big trouble. To me a collar shift is like operating a manual shift car. Push in the clutch and hit the brake to stop.

I love my 990. Some of the reasons for choosing it were.
1. 40Hp 4cyl ---normally aspirated engine. No turbos to worry about.
2. Its a wide stance machine. Tires spun out make it as stable as it gets.
3. The weight of the machine is right between the 3X and 4X machines.
4. Again..the transmission is a simple as it gets. You can get quite fast at changing directions while still taking the time to be safe.
5. Value...it has a nice little niche.
7. THe 990 still looks like a tractor....I am not sold on the looks of the sloped hoods..not that it should really matter in your decision.

Concerning the price difference for the 4120, I would suggest getting the best price for each from several dealers. While the difference in list price may be $6000, no one actually pays list or even close to it. The difference in actual price when I bought my 4120 last October was exactly $3150 (powerrev 4120).

Had to comment here, since I went through this recently.

I shopped the 990 v. the 4120 at three different dealerships. The price diff was not one penny narrower than $5,000. Since I couldn't for the life of me see five grand worth of difference between the machines, I bought the 990.

I shopped for a tractor for at least 6 months and decided on the 990 for my 175 acre ranch. This tractor can not be beat for it's value, and reliability. I have nothing but praise for this little mighty machine. You can shift on the go and nothing is "gut wrenching" about the transmission.

I spent the extra 5,000 dollars on fencing!!

nothing really....i compared the 990 to the 5103, the 5103 was $500 cheaper at the time so i did what any man would do...i went w/ more power!! The 990 is a tried and true tractor, you can't go wrong. I bought the 5103 b/c the deal was better and the tractor was a little stronger/beefier.

I have never used a round baler with mine, but baled about 300 square bales this spring. It has enought horsepower, but it will really shake you around. It better be on flat ground too.

that is an impressive picture. It almost makes me rethink my decidion to get a 4100 over a similarly priced 990 in 2001.
