Kubota L4400
I have a Kubota L4400. What would be a good back hoe? I've just started looking into this. I see a Woods BH 9000 on Craig List. The ad says it came off a Kubota L 3840. Would this work on mine? It's advertised for $5500. The ad claims this is half the cost of new....

Is it a 3 point hitch hoe or a does it have a sub frame. There are people on here who will tell you don't get it if it is 3 pony one. They will say it will break your tractor. If you use it with common sense you will not have a problem.

Looks like sub frame.

"Berwick, ME" ???
You live where there are rocks and clay.
DO NOT BUY a 3pt. hitch backhoe!

I have rocks. IMG_0601.JPG. I agree that sub frame are more sturdy, but 3 point hitch ones are not that bad. I don't have a problem with mine. Ballast boxes are a lot of stress on three point hitches when you go over bumps.

What do you need it for? I have a full size backhoe and use the loader on it more than anything. The actual backhoe was used at first on a few projects and once they were done it gets very little use. Thinking of selling it. Unless you have unique requirements I tend to think it is the type of thing better to rent. I think I have used the actual backhoe part once this year. Then again $5,500 is relatively cheap and wouldn't take a ton of use to get your monies worth out of it.

Work and fit are two different things.

If you get the subframe and it fits or is modifiable that would be great.
Grab a manual for it off the Woods site. Very likely you can get a Safe-T-lock kit (see pic). I'm thinking of trying to get one built for my M4700/BH70-X combo.

Corresponding with Woods they use the 3pt kit with larger tractors and recommended it for my M4700.

I've a situation where if I want to rent one it's a 2 hour drive IF they have it.

All that being written if you need/want a hoe and don't have to drive it far a used mini-ex makes more sense. My application was for narrow trail building and driving a min-ex a mile over rough forest trails would take a LOT longer than driving my tractor the same mile.

If you need to fabricate your own sub-frame, you may want to read kfkrug's excellent thread on the subject.

Yes, that link would require a lot of refreshment. Click on it and it brings you back here, so you can click again, etc..

And the TBN'er is dfkrug, not kfkrug:

I'll assume you were referring to that thread. :)

What, you're not into recursion?
Actually, recursion gets you somewhere.
My previous post was more like a FORTRAN Death Do Loop - had me chasing my tail when I checked the link.
Not enough coffee and still recovering from shed demolition & dumpster loading, yesterday.
