Kubota M7040 4WD
I need to buy a backhoe for my tractor and can't find any information at the Kubota website. The backhoe section for M series tractors is under construction. I have a M7040 tractor with 4WD and would like to buy a backhoe for it. Does anyone know which model is recommended for this tractor? Is there a Kubota backhoe made for this tractor model or is another brand better? I will be using it to clean up tree debris and stumps left over from hurricane Katrina. Thank you for your help.

Welcome to the forum Gary,

As the back hoe is is simply an
attachment that can be added
and removed the issue is simply
one of total utility for yout use
and any residual value when sold.

Do not get me wrong in discussing
this simply because most back hoe
"attachments" are weaker and in
the case of some of the BX and B
model hoes there have been nasty,
nasty isses with broken cylinders,
damaged weldments on the upper boom
cylinders from over reaching stresses which
are not relieved at the cylinder port,
bent cylinders, no stop tubes in the
upper boom and dipper boom creating
huge stresses on the hydraulic cylinder
packing glands with the end result being
the cylinder being torn apart because there
is no relief valve on the cylinder.

There have been issues with the
"cylinders supposedly leaking" where the
control gimbals are always the culprit -
been there done that with lots of gimballed
hydraulics where I retired from.

For the money involved you may simply be much
much better off investing in a small or the smallest
mini excavator on tracks as you will have resale value
if it is traded in in the future where a machine specific
back hoe will lose huge amounts of value which will be
a huge loss in value to you.

There are a lot of good used tracked back hoe's on the
market which are better suited to the job at hand as
the booms are smaller and stronger and reach further
as well and the design and location of the cylinders
are much better laid out for the end user and most of
them do not have the gimballed hydraulic control valves
where in they are less likely to leak down wherein
the gimballed valves were designed to fit into smaller
spaces on smaller machines where the valve bodies
used on the other machines are banked where each
side may have 5 valves in one valve bank depending
on the model or builder.

I would look for a used or a new small tracked kubota
excavator candidly if it were me for the above reasons
as you may end up spending less money for a stronger
machine and not an attachment to simply add versatility
to your M7040.

The Woods Groundbreaker X BH1050 is suited for that unit. There's also Rhino 95C and Wallenstein GX920 and they make an extend-a-hoe which would be pretty neat too.. You would certainly benefit from talking to your loacal Kubota dealer first, as well. Good luck

:confused2::confused2::confused2:.........Maybe you could educate us ignorant folks on how "Gimballed" hydraulics are your expertise where you retired from.........

Better rather to give no advice than BAD advice..........:(

If you insist:

My related experience involved the repair and maintenance of underground and surface operated mining machinery.

Gimballed hydraulics are always prone to leakage simply because of the design of the control surfaces with relation to the four pistons and return springs which return them to center allowing the pilot pilot operated flow to control the cylinders in most machines.

The more a gimballed control valve is used the faster the surfaces wear and the more likely the individual gimbal will leak due to the spring losing pressure from sagging and loss of metal strength.

The gimballed valves used for smaller machines(with small hoses) bypasses the need to control the function with a "pilot oil stream and the related control valve located at the control surface(being the half of the cylinder or hydraulic motor being controlled by the individual gimbal of the four gimbals on the gimballed valve.

Nope.

"A gimbal is a pivoted support that allows the rotation of an object about a single axis. A set of two gimbals, one mounted on the other with pivot axes orthogonal, may be used to allow an object mounted on the innermost gimbal to remain immobile (i.e., vertical in the animation) regardless of the motion of its support. For example: on a ship, the gyroscopes, shipboard compasses, stoves, and even drink holders, typically use gimbals to keep them upright with respect to the horizon despite the ship's pitching and rolling.

The "Cardan suspension" of a gimbal is named after the Italian inventor Gerolamo Cardano (1501?576),[1] who described the device in detail, but did not claim its invention."
