What can a 58 hp tractor do that a 43 hp can\'t?

Howdy! I am looking at similar models of tractors with different hp ranges... and what I really nead to know is what a 58 hp engine tractor can do that a 43 hp engine tractor can't? If everything else was the same...For instance what size tillers could I real world run with each? Brush hog sizes? HD knife flail mower. Box scrapers? think mostly mild slopes, glaciel till soils in western WA , not too much mud but a lil, and a BH attachment (from research, it says it doesn't matter since hydraulic output is the roughly same between models. These are turbo diesel motors as well. Any and ALL impressions / ideas would be greatly appreciated! Brian Sparkeee24

YOU are talking 15 more HP ABOUT A 30% INCREASE FROM THE 43 hp. Besides the extra HP you are probably talking more weight. From what you said u have 10 acre's? if that is true i can not imagine why you would need a 58 hp tractor.

I bet he's talking about the difference in a JD 4120 and 4720. There would be no increase in weight or tractor size if that's the case...just increase in HP and torque. Unless you've got heavy tilling in thick clay and need more power for other hard work, I bet the 43HP would do you fine. We have really thick clay here and 43 is good for us.

One of these days I will remember that there are other HP ratings besides the PTO one. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: What can a 58 hp tractor do that a 43 hp can\'t?

Hello Everyone! What is a sic? I know what a mower is, but what size can a 43 hp run? what size can a 58 run? As far as to which tractor models I am referring too, a previous poster was correct, but my questions where intentionally non brand specific. So yes, weight is the same for all models. Each model has 8 hp lower for PTO then engine output is. I just want to figure out if I should get the lower cost version and upgrade later, or go all out and have what I really want now, even though I may not nead it now. So size of attachments, like working width, and depth thats actually real world attainable on mowers, box scrapers, blades, and tillers is what I am most interested in. I don't have 10 acres yet... but it is my dream, and a goal, that I am going to make happen! In the mean time, I can use this tractor on the acreage I have now, and for side job electrical work. Eventually within my own company I wish to start. Though it would not get everyday use... the backhoe features are what I am most neading, in a work envirornment, and pallet forks. But those are all the same, for these models. as I understand it, the hp only really effects things driven off the pto, and steep hill climbs and such. Thanks for the great advice folks! It's really helping out! Brian

To me, you have answered your own question, and should get what you really want now.

Otherwise, the 58 hp tractor will do everything the 43 hp tractor will do, only it will do it easier and with less strain on the engine.
But, the 43 hp will not do everything the 58 hp will do.

I'd summarize your dilema, and say go for the 58 hp. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: What can a 58 hp tractor do that a 43 hp can\'t?

Most likely, you'd be able to carry the next size up in any implement you want. The PTO HP is the important one for those implements that use a PTO shaft, and lets say you can pull a 6' rotary mower with the 43, and a 7' with the 58. You'll speed up your operations a good deal by being able to use larger implements, as long as the tractor can handle the extra weight of those implements.
As you say, the hydraulic power of the tractor will dictate what the backhoe does, but the tractor will need weight carrying capacity and HP to carry a large backhoe. I doubt you'd have any trouble with either of these for a backhoe, probably of the same size though. I'm assuming the flow rate is the same between them.
I agree with beenthere, you should buy what you want between those two.
