Well, its almost that time to get out into the fields/gardens and get some early work done. Id like to hear what crops/livestock everyone will be growing or raising this year.

Personally I have a couple dozen meat chicks and some layers coming.
I also will be planting a few acres of field corn, as well as sweet corn, tomatoes, peppers, squash, pumpkins as well as all of the salad type crops out there. I also was thinking about feeding some hogs this year, but we'll see.

Id be interested to hear what the rest of you are going to venture into this season.

We will be doing the usual large gardens...all the normal stuff, potato, onions beans, carrot, watermelon, peppers.About 11/2 acres over two gardens. We also put in another 8 acres of food plots.....field corn,soybeans..sunflowers.I like to try something new each year.I planted an acre of switch grass four years ago..should be nice this year.Switch grass is just cover..no food value for wildlife. My other project is trimming all the old growth apple trees..we have hundreds. Our farm laid dormant for at least 50 years..we have lots of on going projects to recover the land.

Thanks for the response. Thats a heck of a garden. I too will be working on some fruit trees. Theyve been in the ground for about 3 or 4 years now.

I'm working on orchard too. I have apples galore and some walnuts and wild plums, but am working on getting a real homestead orchard going, with pears, cherries, apricots, peaches, figs, and italian prunes. The wife and I have been talking about putting in raised beds near the back door, where they would be really convenient. We have lots of herbs in the landscaping, like oregano, sage, thyme, rosemary, rhubarb, etc. I would like to get some asparagus beds started.

I may dabble in livestock after I retire, but I don't have the time right now. I have 5 acres of oak that is just begging for some feeder pigs, but getting water there will be a project.

I'm retired now so the garden got a lot bigger;I supply my three kids ,spouses and grandchildren plus a few neighbors with fresh veggies. We can tomato's and beans ,store potatoes and onions for our winter larder.
We planted sixty tomato plants, sixty lbs of potato ,ten lbs of onions ..lots for everyone.
I hatch and raise 1500 pheasant per year,I own a small preserve. They get all the left-overs.
Our second garden is for pumpkin and squash, lots of pie pumpkins, acorn squash a few jack-o-lantern.Nice to see stuff grow.I also have 300 raspberry plants,50 blueberry........I had 300 strawberry plants but couldn't keep the rabbits out.I am going to try a smaller plot of strawberry and fence-in.
Gardens are a lot of work;but fun..the rewards are worth it.

60'x30' Garden which I will expand to 80'x30' this year.
Plus, I need to start pruning about 20-25 apple trees. Trying to bring back a few in the yard plus an old orchard. We will be receiving 2 piglets, 12 layers and 30 meat birds end of May.
Going to be a busy spring. I need to finish the new coop plus a small shelter for the meat birds. They will be moved to an open pasture cage with the small shelter to be moved around for grazing over the summer.
