I have the worst luck with winches. Just installed a brand new Superwinch on my RTV. While winding the rope on I noticed a few small pieces of metal falling from beneath the winch. After I finished, I looked at the winch and notice a black rubbery substance coming from the right side of the winch. Seems like it might be a weather seal or something. But on top of the metal shavings I saw, now this.....My winch is brand new, no use other than winding the rope on.

The last winch I had on my atv did something similar after a few uses, only it was metal shavings and the winch took a crap. Is it something I am doing?

G L, If you bought it on line, make the phone call and request a pre-paid shipping tag for the winch's return trip back to them. As heavy as they are, it will take some bucks to ship it and that should not be on you. I doubt they will bat an eyelash and send you a new one. If it was brick and mortar bought, swap it out over the counter. I fished around a bit on the i-net and couldn't find any other examples of what happened to yours so maybe it is just an isolated issue.
I bought a new kitchen faucet set ($250.00) over a year ago and just before Christmas it started leaking from the hot water flex line so I hopped over to the big box and found out that only the faucet company supplied that hose so I called their 800# and within three days I had a COMPLETE brand new in-the-box replacement faucet set!:confused2: All I needed was a $5 flex hose but they insisted otherwise.

Well, I called superwinch and explained the issue. I also emailed them a picture. They advised to call Amazon. I did and Amazon is sending out a new one. Probably the whole setup. I just need the winch though, I'm not disconnecting all the wires I ran and mounted. The new wires will just get sent back with the damaged winch once I make the swap.

This superwinch was a gift from the wife. I picked it out because of the price. I wasn't going to pick out a $600 dollar Warn or Ramsey winch for her to purchase. Now, for the price of this 4500lb capacity Superwinch, I'm questioning the quality of Superwinch. I figured it would at least be better than the Champion brands you get at Tractor supply. I'll give this Superwinch one more chance. If it doesn't perform, I'll step up to a better brand.

Your Superwinch had a rubber seal ground up exiting from the gear box? Did you run it until it crapped out or just replace it when you noticed it? I'm wondering if the winch would still last regardless. Either way, it can't be good and would lead to other issues.

I've got to throw you this bone:
montanajacks.com has a Warn RT40 (hard wired remote and steel cable) for $445.16 and the Warn XT40 (hand held remote and synthetic rope) for $572.43 PLUS if purchased B-4 12/31/10 you get an additional $50.00 rebate from Warn! Good price from the benchmark in winches company. Check it out.

I got a RT30 for my Rincon for 339.00 this is the cheapest winches on the net that I have seen. They had a warn bumper listed for 211.00 and I found one from a another site for 171.00 and they matched the price. Sweet deal I thought.
The RT40 is 419.00

to save the life of your winch never power out the wire or rope it will just overheat the motor. it's best to manually pull the rope out.

I would go ahead and bite the bullet and upgrade to Warn. Once you have had one of these winches it's hard to imagine getting along with out one. I have a Warn 3500 CI mounted on my 2006 Sportsman. Five years of trouble free use. And the Warn is just plain and simple brutal pulling winch.
