Someone once told me that there aren't any stupid questions. Just stupid question askers! That's kinda the way I feel! Fixin to pull the trigger on a Kubota L3240 w/ R4 tires. Outside tire width measures 67". I always thought it was a good idea to have a disc slightly wider than the tire width. My question is, would a 5' disc work, or should I go with something wider? Is there a difference in the advertised width as compared to the actual "working" width? All help will be greatly appreciated. Bill

Unfortunately I can't really give you a good answer. But I can tell you some things that should be considered. What type of disk? Offset. tandem, 3point, pull, wheel. What size blades? 16", 18", 20", 22". What type of blades, smooth or serrated or both. I would try to find a set 6' wide to use. Probably a 3pt tandem set with 18" or 20" blades. I happen to like serrated blades. Should confirm this with others, all I have are pull disks, so I am only guessing as far as the 3 pt disk. What I do know for sure is that you can not just go by the width when someone tells you that they use a certain width size disk. All disks ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL. They can vary from 40lbs per blade to over 600lbs and it makes a big difference on what you can actually use. sorry that I'm not really much help, but there are a lot of different things to consider. ;)

Good luck

Thanks Brian. Man, are you right about there being a lot of things to consider. This will be a 3 pt set up. Right now, my main question comes down to the simple (?) width issue. Bill

Disk are supposed to be measured across the front gangs. So a 5' disk will actually be around 6' across the back gang. It will be wider than your tractor and will plow out your tracks.

pjbci, I guess with the word "supposed", that means the best thing to do is get out the tape measure. Thanks

Yep. Better to measure it youself than take the salesmans word for it.

I have a TC 30 New Holland with a King Kutter 6.5 foot angle frame disk . My thoughts and experience so far are as follows .

Depending on your soil type , mine being clay based , I prefer both axles with notched disks . In the harder soil , they seem to break the soil better . Thus I purchased new notched disks and replaced the smooth disks on the front axles .

Never owned a box frame which are heavier , so on my angle frame , I added 5 100# tractor weights that were being gave away for scrap . At some were around 1100# now , tractor will still pull it up hill in low range with the 18" disks buried to the axle , ( HST model ) .
