What do I need to help my truck out?

B&W on both of mine installed by the dealer. Bed mat on the 2003, Line-X on the 2008. Tekonsha trailer brake on the 2003, factory on the 2008. Haul my Big Tex trailer loaded with tractor and implements or hay and my Sundowner 3 horse slant loaded with 1400 pound warmbloods with both. I have not had to beef anything up on either. My 2003 has 170,000 miles and the factory brakes. Tow/haul mode and trailer brakes make a big difference.

As long as you properly balance the load on the trailer and stay within your trucks towing/hauling capacities, you shouldn't have to make any modifications to the truck. In fact, it's much safer if you don't. IMO

Bust an axle at highway speeds and things can get very bad in a hurry.

When I purchased my 1991 Chevy p/u, and pulled a large camper that was within it's weight rating, the back of the truck squatted lower than I liked. I called GM and asked about putting overload or helper springs, and if that would void my warranty. They said adding the springs to keep the truck level under loaded conditions was not a problem as long as I remained within the trucks load ratings.
