Posthole Digger What do I need to know about posthole diggers before I buy one for my Kubota L44

I have used it in sand, good dirt, and rock hard Clay. I have pulled up large and small rocks.

Before I put a new drilling tip on it (roughly $35 @ TSC) it was a pain and I thought it needed down pressure.... But now you set it on the ground, spin it, and it digs. No down pressure needed

I don't see DG listed in your type of soils, so I am going to assume that you have not dug in DG. What got me to get a down pressure kit for my PHD was 3- 18" dia holes that I had down about 18"-24". Could not get any deeper with the auger and we are talking about a new $500-$600 bit with Pengor teeth. This was a Saturday. Filled with water and figured that I would finish digging on Sunday. Sunday came and went and the water had barely gone down. I was basically digging in solid rock. I am a weekender and when I need to get something done, it needs to be done now, not 2-3 days later. Ordered the down pressure kit, never taken more than 2 minutes to dig a hole full depth since.

So while new teeth solved your problem, it is not the answer for everyone. Oh and just for a reference, I have A Land Pride PD35 which happens to be on par with Danuser's biggest PTO driven PHD, the F8.

Help me. What is a down pressure kit?

Most 3pt hitches do not have any downward pressure other than the weight of the implement. Most 3pt post hole augers do not have any way of aiding with the digging process other than the weight of the PHD itself. So when a person has difficult ground to dig holes into, it is nice to have the option of aiding the digging process. Some manufacturers provide a place to actually add weight to the PHD to improve the digging process. Others have a hydraulic down pressure option that can be added to the PHD to increase productivity of the auger.

You can see the hydraulic on top of the boom. That PHD has a down pressure kit added to it to aid in the digging process. ;)

What's DG?

Decomposed-decomposing granite. Actually not that bad to work with when it's damp, but when it's dry and is packed or sometimes even virgin soil, you can get sparks off of it.
