Hey guys I'm new here and need some advice from your experience. I'm looking at two tractors for family and business use a '03 L4310GST with 125hrs and a '01 L3710GST with 760 hrs. The 3710 has a FEL but the 4310 doesn't and that is something we definately want. We've been given a price of $16,600 for the 4310 which is in like new condition but we would have to put a FEL on it for another $3850. The 3710 is goin for $14,500 and is in decent shape cosmetically and runs great but needs new front tires. Of course we need new implements like mowers disks and so forth so the price is getting up there and we'd like to save money where we can. Basically if we go with the 3710 instead of the 4310 we'll save probably about $6g's, but the 4310 is in like new condition so were probably saving 3-4g's on it. Here are my questions:
1)Do you think those prices are good, or do we need to do some more negotiating?
2)Do you think we could get by with the 3710 or do we need the 4310? (look below for a description of work we want to do)
3)Do you have any suggestions for implements? (disk harrow, rotary or brush mower, rake, box blade, spreader)

My family owns about 300 acres in central Florida that is primarily pine timber and some low lying hardwood areas. We need the tractor to mow and clear brush in pine plantations in small strips and down planted rows on a rotating cycle every 1-3 years. We also have fire lines that we want to keep open and disk periodicly, clear, plant and maintain food plots for wildlife and general road and trail maintenance. Another thing we want to do is to be able to slowly clear and maintain small 1-3 acre openings within a large thinned hardwoods. All the work on the property is seasonal and once done initially will only be done on a as needed basis every 1-3 years. I also own an landscaping business and would probably find uses for the tractor in it and try and even makes some money to cover the expenses of the tractor, however that would not be its primary use.

The 4cyl engine in the 4310 will give you 15-20% more hp vs. the smaller 3cyl. in the 3710. Sounds like you have a good bit of brush mowing planned, among other things. The 4310 and 3710 will both drive a 6ft. brush mower just fine, but having some extra ponies on tap can be useful in any kind of heavy cutting situation.

One thing I would check on the 3710 is front end wear. If the front tires are worn, it may mean it has done a lot of loader work, which can cause wear on the the bearings, spindles, etc. You might want to have a Kub mechanic look it over before buying.

Otherwise, either tractor should perform equally well for what you have planned.

The 3710 has a 4 cylinder engine too. The new 3830 has a 3 cyl.

In my minds view of your use, either of these tractors might be great for the landscape business, but I would think for work on 300 acres, a full size utiltiy tractor might be more desireable. It would not only give you more power, but more ground clearance for the woods. This might save lots of repairs on the under side or the need for a belly pan. Sitting up higher while mowing, might give just a slight amount less dust as well as come nearer knocking you off with a low hanging limb /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
