What do you who heat with wood do with a winters' worth of wood ashes?

Nothing complicated to it. I just dump my ashes in old wood piles scattered on my land.

I cut, split and burn about 3 - 4 cords a year at my place, but I'm gone a good bit over the winter. Too much snow and cold in the mountains.

I have a dry creek bed except for in the spring. My ashes go in there, then the neighbor benefits from the PH level in his marsh.

11 tons per acre will raise soil ph from 5 to 6 (see graph on page)

That's a LOT of wood ash , and it doesn't make a permanent change, soil has a strong "buffering" capacity;-)

Thanks. Basically says the same thing my local ag agent did when I questioned him after a really bad garden year.

I'm not sure I would have put that info out for the world to see. EPA seems **** bent on forking with little guys about agricultural waste run off in watersheds. You SF guys were never shy about a fight though... Braver than me.
