Planning to move from Snowy Upstate NY to Sunny AZ, and just have to take my rusty, trusty 1710. Anybody know roughly what these weigh?:

1710 4WD with QT Loader
Woods backhoe
5' Disc harrow
5' box blade
6' finish mower
6' rear blade.

Any suggestions or shared experience in hauling one of these little critters 2500 miles? Am thinking of buying about a 20 foot car-hauler type trailer with a full deck. Either 7,000 or 10,000 pounds seem to be most common.

You can only put about 5,000 lb on a 7,000 lb trailer because you have to subtract trailer weight. I think you are pushing the limit, especially if your 1710 has loaded tires. I'd go with the 10,000 lb trailer. I don't think you'll ever be sorry with that decision except at first when you have to pay for it. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

JS,

I don't have an idea on the weight but I do agree with Jim that you'll most likely need the 10K trailer for all that.

I guess my question/thought/2 cents is why are you taking all the attachments? If you took the tractor/FEL/BH with you and sold the rest, you could probably get down to a 7K trailer. The savings on the trailer, fuel, wear and tear on truck... plus the sale of the attachments could be enough for you to buy all new attachments when you get to AZ.

Are you having movers move everything else with a semi? Maybe they could take some of the attachments for you on the semi. And then you just have to worry about the TLB and maybe 1 or 2 attachments. Don't know, just a thought.

I checked around and the 1710 4wd dry is 2650 lb. If the QT loader is around 1,000 lb and the backhoe is 1,500 lb, you are already over the 5,000 lb limit for the 7,000 trailer. All your implements are overload. You really do need the 10k lb trailer or follow some of the other good suggestions you have been given.

Thanks Jinman and everybody. You have convinced me - will go for the 10,000 GVW trailer. Am starting to price them now.

Yes, makes no sense for me to do what I am doing (moving my old tractor and implements all the way to Arizona). That PROVES it is a hobby!! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I may leave the mower behind. As noted - not much grass where I am going.

Will be moving myself - bought a former school bus for about the price of renting a U-Haul truck. First trip in May, last trip in July. First trip will have a little car on the trailer so plenty of room weight-wise for hauling an attachment.

Hope this works! Anybody want to buy a used bus in Arizona this July??

Was out to AZ. last month. Nice weather, great scenry. Didn't see much for jobs though ( not that I'm looking ). Did you ever think of having an auction ? Went to a farm auction last week. I was floored by the prices. Compacts bring 95% of new price 5 years old. Don't even think about bidding on an attachment. They are made of gold... or so it seems. Raising the hand to bid must be the same drive as slot machines. I was going to mention the grass, or the lack of. I know you can get by without it. If it were me I would sell here and buy out there. I know you couldn't hire the move for the difference in cost. Good luck, and don't forget the sunblock..
