I tore down an old 30x60 building. I have all this old tin from it, you know the old galvanized farm tin. Local scrap guy would like to have it. He will pay $100 per ton. I know he will get at least double that where he takes it 45 miles away. Anybody have any idea what this stuff weighs per sheet? That might make a difference to me what I do with it.

That's hard to answer not knowing the metal gauge and type of corrugation, but most likely it will weigh between 1 and 1.5 pounds per square foot. If it was a really thick metal (18 ga) it could be 2.3 pounds per sf or so.

I have seen wanted ads in Craigslist for old barn tin (wanting to reuse). You might consider that before you scrap it. Of course, if it all rusted and narly scraping makes sense.

Whether or not to let the scraper make the trip to the scrap yard - your decision. If you have the trailer to haul it on and the time, I would haul it myself.

If you don't have a micrometer to measure the metal thickness but have a set of feeler gauges you can check thickness pretty close with the feeler gauges and an adjustable wrench (Crescent). With the known thickness and square feet the weight can be calculated other than for the minute difference of steel and the thin galvanized coating weight.

I don't know your location but just the other day the local scrapper told me this stuff was bringing 330.00 per ton. Maybe you should ask the scrapper to step up or take it in yourself.

One pound sheet weights right around one pound weight.

Around here, scrap is only 11cents a pound, but all we have are those little scrap places that have sprung up since metal prices have risen. Then they hual it to the city where they get more for it. He's getting 16.5cents a pound and wont have to hual it, which is better than I can get even if I hual it. The distance I would have to hual it to get the good money just isnt worth it for the small amount of scrap I accumilate.

Just re-read the OP. I confused what the OP was offered to what someone else was getting. $100 a ton is only 5cents a lb. Tell the scrapper to step up or you will just hual it yourself.

I've dealt with cleanups on my place for over six years.

Find someone to haul it and pay you for it. It is not worth hauling it yourself. The time is better spent elsewhere.

Depending upon the condition ... as another poster stated ... if its reuseable it will sell on CL. I see alot of it for a dollar a foot.

I have sold it at auctions piled up and a count of how many sheets there are and how long ... again its usually about a dollar a ft.

If its real bad old and rusted thru ... well that will also make it weigh less.
