Or bad? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I'm starting research on a new RFM. I'm in the process of combing through old threads. I'll probably buy either a 60 or 72". My question is this - what makes a good one a good one? A lot of people own them, and most will say theirs is good. What features should I look for? What should I try to avoid? If you are going to recommend a brand (please), tell me specifically why your recommendation is a better unit than another brand. I'm trying to avoid a $1500 - $2000 mistake. Thanks.

Tim

With your size tractor I would strongly urge you to limit your size to a 60" deck. I have a TC24 which is very comparable to your B2410 and I just traded in my decade old 60" RFM for a MMM. Under a heavy load of either tall or wet grass, the 60" deck could severely bog down the engine of the 24hp tractor (18.5pto hp). We have very lush and thick grass, so if you have thin grass it will be less of a problem, but there is probably no way that you could ever convince me that you could efficiently power a 72" deck.

As for what makes a good deck? A very heavily built A frame is probably a good place to start; the stronger the better, it takes a lot of stress and needs to be sturdy. Heavy metal construction of the deck would also be good. I prefer decks that do not have areas on top that will hold water. Make sure you have anti-scalp rollers as well as guide wheels on all 4 corners. If it is a rear discharge design, make sure there are chains over the discharge area to deflect flying objects that might get kicked up by the blades.

I generally feel that a mower deck gets more hours than any other implement on a small tractor and with mower decks it sure seems like you get what you pay for. My old deck was not traded in because of any problem with the deck, it was traded in because I needed more room in my garage. And at over 10 years old, I was very surprised with how much I got from the dealer for the trade in. In fact, he will be reselling that used deck for about the same price that some of the bargain decks sell for new, and I'm willing to be the new owners will get another 10 years out of it.

Thanks Bob - I always appreciate your advice and perspective. My fear is you are probably right about the 72. I really would prefer the 72 because I think I can get closer to things and the real reason is that as I go around, I can set over a full wheel width, rather than follow in the previous tire line. My tires are set at 54" wide.

Right now I have no grass (I'm in the process of putting in the lawn) which is why I'm starting to think RFM. I will go rear discharge. My terrain is hilly in some places so there is some concern about power availability to climb the hills while powering the mower. As always, thanks for the wisdom.

Tim, another thing to consider is front counter weight. If you are not mowing with a FEL on the front of your tractor, then you will need some form of front weights to keep your tractor from doing wheelies if you buy a heavily built deck. I added 100# via EZ weights to the front of my tractor, but I probably should have added 125# because I have hills and I found that I would lift the front end if I accelerated up even a small incline.

I have a FEL but never mowed with the RFM and the FEL because most of my property is filled with trees and the overall lenght would have been unmanagable.

I mowed with the MMM for the first time yesterday, and did some more mowing today. I will say it takes some getting used to when you are used to a RFM. I think I mowed much faster with the RFM and I also found that I knew how to track my last cut line better around the corners with the RFM. Using the MMM I found that I missed about 6" wide by 3' to 5' long on most of the corners I took /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. I think I turn too tight /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I also liked being able to back the RFM under trees.

I would suggest,

Rounded front corners

Tapered trailing sides

Strong enough that when you hit something (accidently of course) it will just feed the mower (& maybe the tractor ) around the object without bending or denting the mower.

Easy belt adjustment or replacement.

Grease fitting accessibility without having to remove covers.

what to look for? a sturdy heavy RFM is what i suggest! the current one i have now is a Befco RFM 60" rear dischage. and i think it is the best of the previous ones i have owned. very well made, belt adjustment is very easy, and belt replacement is also easy.(never had to replace any so far) i had a KK a few years back and that was a PIA just to adjust the belt.(but that was a few years ago and they y have changed the design. but when shooping for one i would suggest u check out things like that.

I would suggest making sure that you have a floating 3pt linkage, I agree that being able to grease without removing the covers is good, I like dual belt designs and the new spiral gears, they seem to be quieter. I don't like the 2 piece pulley designs as they can break and separate, the one piece pulley is a better design but costs more.

Thanks guys for the help. I emailed Ken Sweet since their seems to be a lot of positive comments about the First Choice. He recommended the 72" and says he is putting 60" on BX's, although he did say it depends somewhat on how steep the hills might be. Anyone else have any thoughts, either on which mower and why or the right size for a B2410 (24 hp gross, 18.5 pto)? Thanks.

I would strongly suggest you go look at a few tractor dealers and see what they have, if for no other reason than to educate yourself. Also talk to some of the dealers and ask about the sizes they would recommend. They are in your area and may have a better handle on what is being used on similar terrain.

Look at the different brands and how heavily (or lightly) they are built. Also look at different models within different brand families. For example, Befco mowers are some of the finest I know of, but there are large differences between their C-30 and their C-50 units. I would never want a C-30 but the C-50 is an exceptional unit that has every feature I would find desireable, it also comes at a high price, but again, you will pay more for high quality. I am not pushing that brand, I am simply using it as an illustration of how one premium brand, known as an industry standard bearer, can have a lower grade unit that I would not buy, plus the premium unit that others try to copy. The C-50 has spiral gearing, a very heavy weight deck, reinforced A frame and floating top link, anti scalp rollers, etc. By comparison, the C-30 is much lighter guage steel, standard gears, etc.

But I think you will do yourself a big favor if you really go out an LOOK at these things first hand.

If you were buying a tiller, that would be used a couple hours a year, I'd probably argue to go cheap. But a mower deck really is an investment and a good heavy unit will last as long as your tractor, and you will likely run more EACH WEEK than a typical person operates a tiller IN A FULL YEAR.

My old unit is for sale now, it is OVER 10 years old. The dealer has it on the lot for $950, he will take $850. That is a testiment to the quality of the deck, and there was NOTHING wrong with the deck, I traded it in so I could gain room inside my garage because I am tight on space so I changed over to a MMM.
