I'd go with either Echo or Husqvarna. I've never been a Stihl guy. Have nothing against them, just never gone with them in the past. Only one dealer in town and they are jerks.

Try northwestpowertools.com they have a huge selection of Echo and Husqvarna at good prices and they ship all over. might have issues with the CA deal though since any reputable dealer will not ship you a unit since they could get their dealership yanked if they found out.

thegreatfixer,
Get an ECHO and you'll never have to fixer. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I have an old (1985 model) SRM-3000, and other than one plastic purge valve ($1.25) it has never needed any repairs (I even have the original washable air filter in it) . I felt guilty after ten years and replaced the spark plug. that's it. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
This is not one that gets used for two or three months a year either, we have a year-round growing season.
There are many good brands out there:
Tanaka, RedMax, Maruyama, Husqvarna, Stihl, Efco.
But, 9 out of 10 pros here in the sub-tropics use ECHO. It's funny when you go into a full-line (professionally servicing dealer) store with several brands to see them with ALL the other brands on sale but not the ECHO. And they still out-sell the others here. The only exception is the Stihl chainsaws. They do have a good hold here.
One more thing, just for fun, examine the websites of the brands you're looking at. Look for say, a parts manual online.
I've done this just looking for information and ECHO has every manual online! Stihl doesn't, Husqvarna doesn't. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I'm in Cal too. I've had no problems buying Stihl or Echo two strokes. I have the FS250 Stihl trimmer/cutter with the Echo head for easy changes and it swings THREE .155 filaments! It was more than the $200 for sure. Both the Stihl and Echo products I use are awesome. I wouldn't trade 'em for anything else.

I have a Ryobi 4 stroke that worked for a couple of years. It never worked that good and it was always uncertain if it would start or continue to run. I have a Stilh blower that has never worked since day one. I took it back and they worked on it and when I got it back it still didn’t work. I was in the process of moving at the time and it got put on the back burner and now the warrenty is over. It’s my fault that it didn’t go back to the shop but still I expected better out of such a good brand. I finally bought an echo blower and string trimmer at Home Depot. They work great.
