First post for me. I just purchased a Max 25 HST with 780 hours. When checking the tractor after getting it home I noticed an area on the trans that appeared to be a filter location. It was filled with dirt and gunk. After spending time off and on for days I still haven’t figured out what goes there. It is in the center under the rubber cover near the seat as pictured. I cleaned it all out and stuffed a shop towel in there for the meantime.

Looks like it's just cast into the housing for other applications and that filter location is not used on that tractor. The HST is usually made by someone else and will fit a variety of different tractors or equipment.
Have checked underneath for another filter? It may have one for the HST and one for the Hydraulics.

I checked underneath for a filter at the usual location, there is one there. There was oil mixed with dirt in the area in question.
