MAHINDRA 5530 / 1947 John Deere Model M
Ok, I'm going to try and explain this the best I can and I know, I know need pictures but probably going to be the weekend before I'll be able to get those so for now I'll have to try and describe it. First of all this is on a Mahindra/Kodiak 6ft. SD bush hog. Noticed yesterday that I was getting a slight vibration while cutting after further observation I noticed the safety shield covering the PTO shaft was catching on something. I pulled the safety shield back at the bush hog gearbox end because I could tell thats where it was catching. (ok heres where my ignorance comes into play :confused2:) Theres a plastic ring there with tabs that actually hold the safety shield in place, these tabs were hitting some "pin" that was sticking up from the yoke/shaft I tapped the pin down which solved my issue for now. My question is what is this pin? Why was it sticking up? It has no head or anything on it so looks to me like it could slip up/down again? I should mention that I did shear the shear bolt a few weeks back but have done that many times over the years (not with this mower but others). Again sorry for the ignorance here and lack of terminology but couldnt really get any good descriptions from the owners manual. I apprecitate any information anyone could provide on this. I guess my main concern is I dont want this "pin", whatever it is, doing this again or possibly coming all the way out. Thanks again for any help.

Is this on the tractor end, or cutter end??

Is it the shear bolt/pin?? You mention you know what that is already, is this in the same location??

If on the tractor end, is it the quick-release pin you have to push to slide the PTO on and off??

Yea, not much we can do without pics...

Thanks for the reply, as I mentioned its on the bush hog gearbox end so the cutter end to answer your question, and just in front of the shear pin (by just in front I mean towards the tractor). Thanks again.

So there is no slip clutch correct???

It is possible that it is a rollpin that holds the shaft to the yoke itself. Some are welded, others are pinned. Not sure what you have.

But if that is indeed what it is, it will be in the yoke (just like the sheer pin), but NOT the same yoke if that makes sense.

So we get terminology correct, There are TWO yokes, connected by the u-joint. One yoke is connected to the gear box with the shear pin. The other yoke is connected to the rest of the PTO shaft.

Most square PRO shafts that I have seen are welded. Most of the triangular looking ones are pinned. I'll see if I can dig up a picture...

Yes sir, I believe that is it! So now how is that suppose to be held in place so this doesnt happen again?

a roll pin is made of spring steel with a slit in the side (as it is "rolled" into shape). You put it into a hole that is smaller than it, and it forces it to compress. Since it is spring steel, it creates constant tension against the hole and is held in place by the friction. If it is coming out easily, it could be fatigued and needs to be replaced, or the hole is worn and is too big. You could try replacing it, if that doesn't work, you may need to drill the hole bigger and use a bigger pin. You could also drill the hole to match a bolt, and replace with bolt and nyloc nut. Use like a grade 8 bolt.

You could also run properly sized second rollpin inside the first one, or a piece of heavy wire through the center and around the shaft.

Or once its in, you can dimple the opening with a punch to hold it in on both sides.

I favor the bolt Idea if it keeps giving you fits. If it comes out, the shaft will slide out of the yoke, and you will have the PTO shaft still connected to the tractor just flailing around beating things up.

It dont have to be a high grade bolt either. All it is doing is holding the shaft into the yoke. The rotational force is contained by the shape of the yoke and shaft mating up. Kinda like sockets and that little ball that holds them on. This pin is like that little ball, nothing more.
