That's a real shame, David, that those places went under. As far as I'm concerned, Studebaker was one of the best cars built in its day, and the Olivers were fine tractors.
The brick company did a fine job of keeping the Oliver power plant and smokestack. It still says OLIVER down the side. I'll try to get a picture of it in the next few weeks.
If you ever have the occasion to visit South Bend, there are a few great attractions even though the town, itself, is decaying.
The Studebaker National Museum is a really good museum with many cars on display on three floors.
The Studebaker National Museum
It is connected to the Northern Indiana Center for History which is also a very nice museum. They have a great history of the area from the Native American times up to the present.

At the Center for History, besides the museum, you can tour the Oliver mansion. The mansion is a huge stone house left to the city by the Oliver family. I believe the last child moved out in the 80's and left EVERYTHING to the city. It is exactly as they left it when they lived here. All the original furniture, woodwork, carpets, drapes, silverware, even spices in the cupboards are there. It is really beautiful and worth seeing.
It is told that Oliver and Studebaker were competing with each other for social status and each tried to out-do the other with their mansions. The Studebaker mansion is just down the street. Apparently, both men were very successful. They came to an agreement... Oliver would not venture into building cars if Studebaker would not venture into building tractors. The agreement held and they were both prosperous for a good long while.
Also of interest is the College Football Hall of Fame, Notre Dame University Campus tours and the South Bend Chocolate Factory. AM General has the Hummer H1 and H2 plants close by, but I don't think they give tours anymore.
And, keeping it tractor related, Wheelhorse tractors were made here for decades until they closed up and moved to Wisconsin a few years ago.
