Thanks for all of the suggestions. Right now I'm leaning pretty heavy toward the Tracfone. It seemed really expensive at first, but now I realize that for my purposes it's the cheapest. I'm looking for a little more than just 911 service. For example, last summer my wife was coming into town with the kids to their swimming lessons. A radiator hose sprung a leak and she had to stop a couple miles from town on a rural road. Luckily, an off duty police officer came by and let her use his cell phone to call me. It was close to lunch, so I left work and found them and we swapped vehicles so they could go on into town and not be late for their lessons. Meanwhile, I was able to cut the hose off and reattach it (the hole was close to the end) and make it back to town where I bought a new hose. I did all the work with my handy dandy leatherman tool! Next time, we probably won't be so lucky and have someone with a cell phone stop and help. But, it's not an emergency that would justify calling 911. I can get a cheap phone and sign up for Tracfone and keep it active for roughly $8/month. After a few months, we would have enough time on it to make occasional short calls and still have it for emergency or urgent situations like the one I just described.
