JD855
Hey everyone!
Even though my JD855 is a '95 model and i bought it new, i'm doing my first "major" repair. Nothing has gone wrong until now if you don't count my wife running a rear tie off the wheel, and some other minor stuff [broken sway chain, etc]. I recently blew the steering hydraulic cylinder--leaking at the ram seal. Found out they are not rebuildable, so after looking around quite awhile, i ordered a new JD part. The local JD dealer quit and now i have to go 40 miles one way to get 'em. This really happened because i have pix:

Anyway, i got started, looked easy enough. Got the system drained, unbolted the lines and the "tie rod" ends--then nothing. The d@#% thing is frozen solid in the bolt holes.

What is the trick to getting that cylinder off? Do i need a pickle fork [tie rod fork]? A few shots with a 3 pound hammer didn't work--so i backed off to ask the experts.

Once that's out, it'll be a piece of cake to put in the new one. Won't it?

Thanks for any help

Soaking a while with your favourite penetrating oil is never a bad thing.

I use an 8lb club hammer for this type of thing - hit the side of the mount (the part the bolt goes through), a few good whacks and the "tie rod" ends should drop.

IE. - don't beat on the threaded rod ends - that seems logical, but doesn't usually get you anywhere.

I've had the best results using a tie rod puller. If that doesn't break it loose, put pressure on it with the puller, then tap it with the hammer.

When you use a hammer, try to hit the tie rod socket in a direction that does not try to break it off the housing. If you can't, then use another hammer or something else heavy behind it as an "anvil."

Generally the best way is to hit the "socket" end of the mounting arm/bracket - hitting the end will expand the hole just a bit and most often the tapered bolt will then just drop out. But I can't see what the axle end of the cylinder mount is fastened to, not always a good idea to pound too hard on anything cast, or fastened to cast material. But I'd give a few good whacks, then if that doesn't work use a ball joint fork or a puller. Since you're replacing the entire assembly you don't have to worry about munging up the boots or the ends themselves.

Thanks all.
I've tried beating on the ends every which way. I guess that i'll try the pickle fork as soon as i can get one. I'll let y'all know.

Use a little heat too. Even a small propane torch works wonders...keep it away from the hyd. Fluid if at all possible...

OK i know this may be a dumb question but why do i still see the nuts on?:confused3: While your waiting for your pickle fork or a puller keep squirting it with a good penetrating oil. Also applying some heat then spraying with the oil also works well. Use caution !!! :fiery: Just a hint when using a pickle fork when you do back the nut off don't remove it completely, leave it on a few threads. It keeps parts from dropping and flopping around.
