I found this old pull type implement in the forest and wondered what it was or did. It is very heavy, and the round "drum" is about 6' wide and over 3' high, made of 1/2" steel. The bottom was buried, so I could not tell if it had a blade. Obviously, some parts are missing or damaged. The tongue is very heavy duty, and it has a large spring that probably had a lever attached. The two cylinders in the front are fixed, not rotating. What is it? Some sort of drag pan?? I have no clue.
I was wondering how it could be utilized. I also found an old motor grader that I will ask about later.

Looks like it might what some around here call a tumble bug. Ours has two ropes that are used to control it. One addresses the angle of the bucket when pulling it, pull on the rope to tilt the front edge down and dig deeper, let up and it rocks back and just hauls what ever dirt it has picked up already. Of course you can pull or let up as needed to scrape a nice smooth pass. The other rope is used to trip the bucket and make it tumble, dumping the dirt and stopping with the open side down, resting on the skids on each side. Drag it back to where ever you are removing dirt, trip it again to tumble it to the digging position. I pulled one many hours moving dirt away from our house where we piled it when we dug the crawlspace.

looked like some kind of mining equipment to me. But I bet its the tumble bug described above. Might be neat to use.

Also referred to as a scraper. Similar to a slip, but tumbles as mentioned to empty.
Can amount to a lot of tractor seat time moving some dirt. :)

Reminds me of a 'Fresno' plow

Looks like a reel mower or some kind of leaf catcher.

Tumble bug scraper! The one I have is a little different, but still the same purpose. Originally pulled by horses &/or mules, many were converted to be pulled by tractors. Used for moving dirt! ~~ grnspot110

Neat! Never have seen one before now. It looks to be the pull behind version of a roll over box blade.

So should there be a blade on the bottom like a scrape blade? I am going to have to cut a path to this and hook it up and move it to get a better look. Wonder what the large long spring on the tongue is for?
