OK I feel like a 4th grader who doesnt know how to set a torque wrench.

I have a 2007 JM 354 with the 4 cylinders. I am now looking at replacing the gears due to a broken shifter fork, which is another story all in itself.

Under the transmission are 4 holes drilled into the bottom of the transmission. What are they for? 3 of mine are blind holes, and the 4th is threaded and has a bolt in it. Inside the transmission the whole has been plugged with something that feels like gasket sealer. Is this a drain? Or did somebody have a bit too much sake at lunch and slip with the drill, and figured they'd put some juicy fruit in there and nobody would notice. If all 4 should be tapped, then 3 are not. What would mount to the tranny?

In front of the seat between your knees is a black knob. It looks like it has something to do with the hydraulic tank. The know does not turn. I have never turned it, and have no idea what it might do if I did. I have gone through the manual and looked on here, and find no reference to it.

The power steering lines run from the console down along the left side of the engine. There is a bracket that holds them to chasis, but no bolts. I can not figure if they mount to the upper set of holes, or the lower set closer to the rear. I think that numerous bolts are missing from the location. Looking on the right side, the mount is holding oil filter and other parts in place, and has 6 bolts in place. I may be missing all 6 on the left, if they are supposed to be there. How many bolts, and what size are supposed to go there.

Thanks in advance for any help. Enjoying browsing the forum and learning about all the idiosyncrasys of these beasts.

Do you have a loader? If not the 4 holes on the bottom of the bell housing are for the loader mount. I can not explain what the gunk is or why they are not tapped.

The black knob controls the rate at which the 3 point drops. There is a set screw that is probably painted over and needs loosened first. You may have to soak it with PB Blaster on both the knob and set screw. Once out clean it up an grease the threads and put back together. If you are happy at the rate your 3 point drops just leave it alone.

Where did you buy this thing and who prepped it? Sounds like they did a crummy job leaving bolts out and missing fasteners on brackets. Good luck.

Chris

The holes are directly under the tranny, not under the bell housing. I do have a front end loader, but it mounts much further towards the front of the machine.

I am going to take some of the bolts off the other side, and see if they fit, then go get some replacements.

Thanks for the info, I'll fool with the knob. I didnt want to crank on it and break something. MORE! Ha ha.

See if I can post a picture. This is the bottom of my trans. The one bolt. Has some fluid from me removing the bolt and poking at the goo plug inside trying to figure out what was going on there. The other holes are blind.

The missing bolt holes. And the opposite side with the bolts in place.

I'll take a look this weekend, I'll be going up to our lake home where the tractor lives.

By the way, here's underneath the tranny, all the holes appear threaded. Maybe they're just for bolting to something during shipment from the transmission factory to the tractor factory, I don't know. There's no bolts in mine, maybe your bubblegum theory is correct.

OK, here's my two cents worth.
On the underside of the transmission, the four holes are clearly mounting bosses. I will speculate that they are for mounting: 1) An intermediate U-joint and pillow bearing for front or mid mounted rotating implements driven from a rear drop box on the PTO. 2) A mounting for a mid-mounted grader blade or belly mower. Since the tractor was not ordered with any of those options, the holes were not tapped.
The side covers could possibly be PTO mounting points if they are on the transmission case.

Curious if your tractor was purchased new from a dealer that properly prepped it?

Bob, the side covers are near the front of the engine, note in the first picture I posted the injection pump mounting just above the plate. I know from googling around that these engines are popular for generators and marine use, it may be related to those uses.

As for your theory of mounting bosses for some implement related purpose, that sure sounds plausible to me. Or maybe they're used in some application with a frame?
