Can anyone identify this part and explain what it does? I can only best describe it as a cotter pin. Looks like a cotter pin that is stuck through the transmission body from the bottom with only the "loop" sticking out. I noticed it yesterday while under the tractor zip tying some wires up. I had been mowing and it had dust stuck to it like it was wet. When I wiped it clean I found that it was loose and would spin in a complete circle. I checked a neighbors tractor that is the same as mine and this piece was "tight" and did not move. I wiped mine clean and tapped it back tight. By the way, this is on a John Deere 5105. Piece is most easily observed by looking under the tractor from the right hand side and is just behind the oil pan and brake pedals. I have tried to find on the Deere parts site but can't seem to pin point it.

I believe it is to keep the hole in the casting open It is designed to wiggle around so the dirt stays out of the hole. I had one on my ford 3600 gear drive if the rear engine seal or transmission seal would leak the oil would drip out the hole with the cotter pin instead of filling up the housing and ruining the clutch.

Tell your neighbor that his needs to be cleaned until it's loose before he developes problems. MikeD74T

So by design, this item is supposed to always be loose? It looked a little damp/wet but when I wiped it clean it seemed more like grease. I am not aware of any leaks anywhere that should be causing it to be wet. I added a loader last week and after using it this weekend I noticed a change in hydraulic fluid level although I did not see any leaks around any fittings. Very interesting. Thanks for the quick replies. Sounds like I need to go back and loosen it up so it is as it was when I found it.

Your ~"lower"~ hydraulic oil level,...is more than likely due to your "new" loader using some to fill its lines and hoses etc. Top it up if "too" low, then keep a close eye on it for a few days when using the loader. If all is ok, the level should stay the same. If worried about a leak, place some cardboard under it and look for drips while operating the loader (in place) and after it sits for the night. Good luck!

I had also sent an inquiry about this part to the shop foreman for my local John Deere dealer. He replied this morning with the same response as Jimmy Joe and MikeD74T. Headed out to loosen it back up. Thanks for the quick responses and accurate suggestions.

yep.. drains the dry area of the bellhousing.. leak areas are rear main seals and trans input shaft seals.. I know they have been doing this since at least 39.

The industry standard engineering term for this item is "jiggle pin", and yes, it's pretty much just a fairly large cotter pin (split pin if you're european).

I have checked on some other tractors and this seems to be a common practice. Amazing how with all the technological advances we have made in the past 30 to 40 years that somethings are still better accomplished this way. Glad to see we haven't found a way to mess up/complicate such a simple thing as this.
