Yes it will, but I hold the handle till I know it's going to split, then go get ready for the next one. I've never put a gauge to it to see where the two detents and relief are set at. I'm sure I could tweak it, but as it is I still have plenty of time to get the next piece before the cylinder is retracted enough for it. I don't think it's as risky as it sounds, you get the habit of putting your hand on the top of the wood instead of the end real quick, no matter which valve you use, and I keep a hand on the handle till the wedge is well into the wood. When it comes to the whole tractor logging, chainsaw running, woodsplitting operation, I think it's on the low end of the scale.
