What kind of hitch is this?

Hi all:
I need a little help, take a look at this....
This is an old livestock trailer. I have never seen this kind of hitch before. What is it called? Where can I find the hitch to put on my truck so I can haul this thing?

It's homemade.

You just need a bare ball mount, (no trailer ball) and a pin.

Best solution would be to get a welder to cut that mess off and weld on a proper hitch.

This hitch is designed to accept truck or tractor tounges of different heights. The purpose is to keep the bed of the trailer as level as possible for livestock. It just takes a long hitch pin and remove the ball from your truck. And don't forget the safety chains!!!!!

Yep. Id cut that mess off to and put a co ventional hitch on. They make different drop/raise inserts to keep it level.

Not sure the DOT would aprove of it for highway use. But it would hook right up to a tractor draw bar easily with a long pin.

X2 on cut it off and properly install a std 2" or 2-5/16" (depending on size/weight of trailer) ball coupler type hitch.

Agree. It's a horrible design. No way the trailer can articulate. Good way to put things in a bind.

Thanks all for the info. I will try and find a pin for it. By coincidence, my youngest is taking welding in high school. I think cutting that contraption off and welding a proper hitch would make for a nice little project for him

Be careful! Properly repairing a trailer requires an experienced welder. You have potential for a serious accident if a weld fails! Not necessarily a good project for learning to weld. Good luck and show us how it turns out!

Yep if thinking about using that on anything but back roads the DOT would have a heart attack. Now with that said, since your son is in welding class, see if they want the trailer for a project. Welding such components are not for apprentices unless supervised by experienced welders. A weld that would be fine for many uses gets entirely different load stresses with all the flexing and strain of a hitch.
