When my hearing was better I used to find hornworms by listening for them as they ate. If you look carefully at your tomato plant and the ground beneath it you will see their droppings. Stand very quietly and you will hear them munching away on your plant- as has been said they are hard to pick out by eye only but with a bit of "audio focusing" you can usually find then early.

Good luck.

Huh! Maybe that's what the dog has been after then. While I was out there working the dog came out and he suddenly got real intent and then started digging furiously by the plant. He'd stop and plug his nose in the area he'd dug then dig again. He only dug about 3-4 inches before giving up but he stopped a couple of times and you could tell he heard something because he'd keep cocking his head back and forth. He never got anything though. Maybe the sound of them munching was bouncing off the ground and he thought there was something in the dirt.

I went out and did a quick perusal of the plants and didn't see anymore but I'm going to go get some BT insecticide and go back out again this afternoon. I know my time is limited with the 'maters but I want it to last as long as possible.
